Anybody seen a good account of the production and sale of the "Our
Confederate Dead" monuments seen here and there? I've seen one or two
suggestions that many were actually produced in the North.
This got me to wondering how the business worked. Let's say it is 1905,
and you are a UDC chapter president inspired to look into a monument for
the courthouse square.
How did that work? As I understand, in those days, art sculptors made a
clay model, the pattern for the stone statue, which was produced by
stonecutters.
What was the temporal order of the production and erection of these
monuments, north and south? What set off the population explosion of
carved Johnnys and Billys?
Does anybody know if there was an element of emulation here? The North
has always had a stronger echo chamber, for which reason it is hard to
think of many trends that move from South to North. So I'm wondering if
the marble soldier monument originated in the North, and spread by
emulation.
That's certainly true of other trends, like the symbols associated
with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
