Immigrants should get citizen certificate soon in US?
Its considered by a Senator that immigrants' assets are not only spiritual and economic: they also provide the cultural diversity for which many of us still hope. They melt the pot. Now it is time to melt the heart of this great nation and not just provide paths for citizenship, but much more to welcome immigrants and say thank you, for coming. We need not be just open to immigrants but also welcoming. In the United Church of Christ we call this not just "open" but "affirming." The eligible and deserving should get citizen certificate sooner than later then!... more »

File Immigration Form I-90 to renew green card in US.
For a green card holder while permanent status is permanent, the identification which proves permanent residency status – the green card – is not. Permanent residents need to keep a green card with them at all times to prove their permanent residency and most green cards are only issued for ten years and so you should renew green card. This means that every ten years US permanent residents need to go through the green card renewal process.... more »

Immigration Form N-400 required for US citizenship!
Obama made a passing reference to immigration reform in his inaugural address on Monday and is expected to expand on that during the State of the Union speech to Congress. That element has been a key sticking point with GOP lawmakers for years: that any overhaul of immigration policy must provide a path to eventual US citizenship for the nation’s 11 million or so undocumented immigrants. The president reiterated that immigration reform would be his top legislative priority. To register in the 'selective process' you should have resided in US for a year. For green card holder the registration is immediate.... more »

Canadian 6 months in USA
I am a Canadian citizen and I intend to stay for six months in the United States. I don't plan to work there, and I have adequate financial support to live there essentially indefinitely (yes, I'm rich). I would be there under the six month tourist undocumented category. What should I tell the border protection officer when he asks me "how... more »

Joy completing the process of becoming a citizen in US!
When Basalt resident Joanne Tordoff recited the Pledge of Allegiance early this year, it wasn't something she automatically spit out from repetition as a school kid. Instead, it came from her heart.Tordoff, 42, a ski instructor at Aspen Highlands, was sworn in as a US citizen in Denver after years of submitting to background checks, filing endless paperwork, waiting patiently during a probationary period, then passing a civics test and — mostly importantly to her — swearing allegiance to her new country as last step in the process of becoming a citizen.Started the process in 2000 and green cards finally arrived in April 2005.... more »

The "Legal" Immigration System Reform in The Comprehensive Immigration Reform
The "Legal" Immigration System Reform in The Comprehensive Immigration Reform The immigration reform debates and talks have focused on the three components: Border Security, Immigration Enforcement, and Legalization of Undocumented Immigrants. Why? Because these are key issues that have divided lawmakers, political leaders, and political parties. As time has gone by, there appears to be a compromise looming up between the right and the left through the left more or less accepting the right's issue of strengthening border security and immigration enforcement and the right agreeing to legalization within the context of keeping the legalized undocumented immigrants at the end of row of immigrant wait lines.... more »

The Importance of I-94 Expiration Date for Nonimmigrants
The Importance of I-94 Expiration Date for Nonimmigrants For those who are in the United States temporarily as nonimmigrants, the most important date to track is perhaps the expiration date of the I-94 arrival / departure card. The I-94 is a small card that is usually stapled into one's passport. It is obtained in one of two ways. It can be issued by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at the port of entry upon arrival in the United States. It can also be issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) when one is granted an extension or change of nonimmigrant status from within the United States. If the USCIS issues an I-94, it will arrive attached to the bottom of an approval notice (I-797). This should be detached and placed in one's passport.... more »

Apply for a U.S. Green Card - National Interest Waiver
A National Interest Waiver, or NIW, is an employment-based, second preference immigration application. It is so named because it asks that the otherwise required Labor Certification requirement be waived "in the U.S. national interest." For applicants with an advanced degree - masters or above, there are three ideal options to apply for a Green Card. These options are in different classifications of Employment-based (EB) immigration, including:... more »
