Hold your horses! It's never worth sending it in till about 90 days before
it's due to expire since if it hasn't been approved in 90 days you can take
action. But in any case LA is currently running (according to the latest
AILA figures) at 20-30 days so I would wait till early October to mail it in
but keep watching the AILA updates:

I'm not really here - it's just your warped imagination.

I don't know if this is the case always, necessarily, even though
it probably holds true for LA if they indeed take much less than
90 days. The 90 days is from the date of the receipt, which might
be dated two or three weeks after you mail the application in. I
deal with NYC office, and every application I have sent has taken
them at least a week to open, and my first EAD (admittedly almost
two years ago) took over 100 days from filing to actually getting
it (although it was only 88 days from the receipt date).

So for offices that do take 90 days (some even more it seems), I
believe it's better to send it in more like 100 days before
expiration, just to make sure that you account for the days the
mail sits there before being opened (and travels there as well,
the post office is not the fastest institution either).

Andy
We enclosed a check dated July 7th, should we write a new one or just leave it
and send it out in October like you said
Thanks!

I just filed at L.A. INS for my first renewal, expiration of my current EAD
is September 1. The package was signed for on June 29 and they cashed the
check on July 12. I expect to receive the appointment letter within a week
or so for an appointment end of August.

Also, another person who filed a couple of months before me said that she
actually filed in person at the L.A. office and was given an appointment
there and then for a little under a month later.

Apparently, you can file in person, however, you have to get in the dreadful
line in the very early morning.

I recommand 60 day prior to expiration. Good luck!
