I would say, you might have a bad idler tire, which is partially causing rewind
to fail. Time to replace the belts and/or idler (or idler tire).

Recently I can't 'rewind picture search' on my VCR for different
brands of videotape (i.e. tape isn't at fault).

When I try it I get no picture but a rattling sound and the
video goes to stop mode after a while. Play and forward picture
search is OK. I don't want to keep it pressed cos I fear the
tape might jam, break, get tangled, the rattling sound is scary!

This rattling sound also happens when I insert a tape and the
"Auto header cleaner" operates: it goes forward a bit and then
rewinds (rattling occurs here).

(It could be something to do with that fact I used a wet cleaning
tape and I think I put too much liquid on the tape, it got
tangled in the machine and I had to 'pull' it out (gently).

Should have opened the machine I think. I might have damaged
a sensor or something. Thing is I did this ages ago and not
recently so I don't think it is *linked* to the problem.)

Should I open the case and see what happens visually when I rewind
picture search? Try to fix it myself? Maybe a tape roller is
bent or something. I'm no expert but will use my commonsense :)
