Tivo's don't play CD's.
Mine does! The menu is great. It shows all the MP3 files from the CD-R I
insert, and plays them as long as I don't skip a song. If I skip to the
next song manually the music stops and the CD tray won't open. Then I
have to reboot. I have tried two different CD-R with different songs.
Guess you're right - I never knew that there was a Pioneer DVD
Recorder associated with Tivo. Sounds like a call to the manufacturer
is in order. Or possibly to Tivo support (which is excellent, but I
don't know if they support other than Tivo-branded equipment and
software).

Tivo Customer Care: 1-877-367-8486
From looking at the manual, there are significant differences between
what you have and a Tivo - besides the additional function, you get a
VCR-like capabililty with limited program information (3 days)without
any further activation or fees. But to get the full Tivo functionality
you have to subscribe to Tivo Plus.

Thanks! This unit is brand new, from the box. It works great. It even
burns my recordings to its built in DVD writer. Why doesn't Pioneer have
a current unit? This product was manufactured back in 2004, and I'm
wondering where I can find a similar DVR with built-in DVD writer and
programming guide.
It seems like all DVRs I see in the market don't have a DVD writer. I
would consider an updated version to take advantage of today's tech,
like: high definition, digital turner, higher recording capacity,
support for DVD writer at higher speed and dual layer, and turner duality.
Don't know why Pioneer abandoned further development on this product;
they did such an amazing job with this one. Everything is so easy with
this. Any ideas where I can get a similar up-to-date DVR?

There was Humax, Pioneer and one other (name eludes me) that had the built
in burner.
Now you have to transfer to a PC and then burn

Or take the DVR output into a DVD recorder. It's real-time (2 hours
for a 2 hour movie), is a digital to analog and back to digital
conversion with all that entails, but it works.

Oh! I see..
It is so convenient to have and use the DVD Writer built-in the DVR. I
don't burn a lot, but it is convenient for archiving. Except for the
fact that I cannot record to disc some shows that appear as protected (I
wish I could disable that).
Interesting.
How does this transfer to a PC work? To have an idea. So would I connect
a PC that is connected to the hub where the DVR is connected to and
browse "My Network places" to grab the video files? What format are
these video files? Would I have to do DVD rendering or the files are
already encoded? Thanks!

The Toshiba SD-H400 has a built-in DVD "player" (no burner). It also has
TiVo basic and mp3 capability, but until I read this thread I'd
forgotten that it plays mp3s (don't use them, lossless flac/shn snob
here).

I recently got my mom a Magnavox H2160MW9 from Walmart online for about
$250; DVD recorder with 180GB hard drive, ATSC/clear-QAM tuner, but no
high-def, dual layer, or program guide. For that you might consider
putting together a <cough> MythTV box. I've been using an hdHomerun
stand alone dual-tuner device that connects to the network via ethernet;
any computer on the network can be used to watch and/or record via UDP.
This device only ships with basic command-line software and VideoLan,
it's mainly intended for use with PVR software like Myth, Sage, etc.
Jim
toshiba, works great, so of course they stopped making em...
Thanks Character!
Thanks Jim! The programming guide is a plus these days. It's hard to
understand why there is no a dream DVR machine yet after so many years
of invention (DVD DL recorder, programming guide, ...). Well, hopefully
one day some one will (maybe the people from Apple?!)
huh? there are lots of em out there now (even cable and sat co's have em, i
have two, one comcast/one dish, and my sis has a directv model), however,
they are usually for monthly rental (dual tuner, 250GB, $5 a month) and
don't run tivo software... Why make em for sale when you can rent em for so
cheap?
umm, you may want to read the op's statement again, it says no high def dual
layer etc, why would you think it has it when it says NO? seems it
specifically states that it doesn't have it....
at any rate, if you want to burn dvd's, they all have video out, and walmart
has dvd burners that take video in for under $50, (double sided or component
video instead of composite for a bit more), they, like the old non-tivo
tivos burn stand alone dvd's that can be played on any dvd player...

i have to wonder what you are reading..... or who you mean by op, spider dog
or jim?
it (spider dog) specifically says ", but no high-def, dual layer, or program
guide." (left above so you can see the whole thing in context), so how can
you read that as anything other than no to everything seperated by commas?
are you taking that to mean no high-def, but yes dual layer and yes program
guide? I take the no as applying to everything listed/seperated by commas
until the period/end of sentence
OK, time for a little clarity: due to the above snippage I appear to be
the OP, but I am not. I was replying to someone whose handle escapes me,
who was in search of a device with dual-layer recording, program guide,
etc. I suggested the possibility of building a <cough> Myth box. OK?
Now, if someone does indeed know of a stand-alone dvr with dual-layer
burner, QAM tuner, and free or cheap program guide, I'm all (virtual)
ears.
Jim (aka Spider Dawg)
considering i have 3, and a quick search on the internet shows dozens, heck
even ebay has em listed (use pvr instead of dvr, on ebay, the dvr search
gives you a bunch of security / multiple cam/input recorders) and the post
above even has a specific make model (first sentence >>>>>>> Spider Dawg

OK, I have been reading the last posts and I want clear things out: I'm
the one who made the statement about the DVR dream machine very early
when I created this thread looking for advice for finding such a device.
The "dream machine" referred as involving DVD DL, program guide, etc.
