There's now a slight difference in the retail chart...
The chart I normally use has for some unknown reason disappeared, so I'm
going to be making one up. I'll go for a Top 20 rather than a 40, so
here goes...

10 NEW ENTRY : Pret-a-Porter (15)
Robert Altman's satire on the fashion industry with more stars than you can
throw a stick at just like The Player and Short Cuts.
(For those who are interested, Short Cuts is available to buy in widescreen)
9 (6) FALLER : Leon (18, Buena Vista)
Luc Besson's superb thriller about a hitman who 'moves without sound, kills
without emotion and disappears without trace', but still finds time to water
the plants in his window-box. A quiet afternoon's exercise is disturbed by
corrupt cop Gary Oldman who pays a visit to the family next door (I won't
describe it in detail so you can experience it for yourself, but it's quite
a treat), and safe to say, a little girl (12-year-old Natalie Portman) is made
an orphan. She is befriended by Leon the hitman (Jean Reno) who shows her how
to become a hitman and as the film goes by, their relationship bonds.
She wants revenge on Oldman, and asks Leon to help her. Will Leon match up
to this latest hit? You'll have to watch and find out.
For those who thought all the corrupt-cop-against-good-guy ideas had been
taken, here's one you can't afford to miss!

8 (7) FALLER : Just Cause (15)
Time again for one of those 'films that I haven't seen', but by all accounts
this 'thriller' about a murder has about as much suspense and tension as an
episode of Neighbours. Stars include Sean Connery (always worth a watch though
even if the name of the film is "Medicine Man" :), Larry Fishburne (why does
he insist on being called "Laurence" ?) and Ed Harris.
7 RE-ENTRY : Forrest Gump (12, CIC)
(available to buy for 14.99)
The film that scooped the most Oscars this year, including Best Film, Actor
(Tom Hanks, again) and Director (Robert Zemeckis), is a simple but engaging
tale of a man who does all the right things in life, doesn't always say the
right things, but gets to meet the right people, and be in the right place
at the right time. If you haven't seen it yet, I won't say anything to spoil
it, but I once saw a few articles in rec.arts.movies referring to the fate of
one particular character by putting what happened to them in the subject
header with NO spoiler!
Still, that was only part of it. As a whole I was expecting a good film, esp.
after all the hype, but it was (dare I say it) a masterpiece, and I'd like to
have seen it come 2nd behind Pulp Fiction at the Oscars.
Since it was directed by Robert Zemeckis, I spotted one thing in a scene where
Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise are going across a busy road, a car stops right in
front of them almost hitting them, and Sinise bangs on the bonnet of that car
saying "I'm walking here, I'm walking !"
which... is exactly what Michael J Fox said in Back TTF 2 as Marty Jnr when
the same thing happened in his town square....
which... is exactly what Dustin Hoffman said in "Midnight Cowboy" as
Ritzo Ratzo when trying to cross the road...
Maybe I watch too many films :)
6 (4) FALLER : The Lion King (U, Disney)
The latest Disney animated epic to hit video won two Oscars, one of which was
for the Tim Rice/Elton John song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight ?"
Simba the lion is having trouble accepting the responsibilities of adulthood
and being the next king of the jungle. The many characters he meets along his
journey help him to find his way in the great circle of life.
Voices include Jeremy Irons, Rowan Atkinson and James Earl Jones.

Another Michael Crichton book gets the film treatment. Barry Levinson directs
Michael Douglas, Demi Moore, Donald Sutherland and Caroline Goodall, in a tale
of corporate intrigue, power, sex and ambition.
Douglas plays Tom Sanders, a nice computer manager a nice Seattle-based
electronics company called Digicom, and everything's nice..until he discovers
that an ex-girlfriend, Meredith Johnson (Moore) is to be his new boss.
As soon as she arrives, she seduces him in a late-night 'meeting', but half-way
through he decides no.
Then a new CD-ROM system called "Arcamax" develops a fault, and obscene email
messages turn up on his computer system. He suspects that Johnson is the
culprit and sues for sexual harrassment.
It may not sound like the plot for a high-suspense thriller, but when the going
gets tough, and the heat begins to rise, all of Sanders' computer files begin
to disappear as he accesses them. Cue a trip inside the computer, via a
virtual reality headset, and some superb computer graphics, coupled with
excellent sound FX. Who will win in the end?
It's a shame that this release isn't widescreen because some of the computer
screens containing lines of text, often vital to the plot, get cut off the
screen. Also, the virtual reality scene will lose impact, as will two other
scenes which I remember from seeing the film in the cinema. One was of Douglas
and Goodall standing at opposite ends of the screen as a train goes past, both
in despair as the trial of the century was about to get underway.
The other is during the first hearing, and is a lingering shot covering all
the main characters so you can see for a brief time exactly what everyone is
thinking and feeling from their facial expressions.
Aside form all that, it's a damn good film. Rent it now!

1 NEW ENTRY : Dumb and Dumber (12, First Independent)
Jim Carrey's third feature film sees him teaming up with Speed's Jeff Daniels
as two idiots doing stupid things, all of which raked in tons of money at the
box office.
Apparently this has also been released on PAL laserdisc. Not sure if it's
widescreen though.

18 NEW ENTRY : Pretenders - Isle of View (10.99)
The Pretenders teamed up with the Duke String Quartet for a live acoustic
session at London's Jacob Street Studio. Songs include : Brass in Pocket,
Chill Factor, Back on the Chain Gang, Hymn To Her, I Go To Sleep and the
recent single, Kid. The video runs for 70 minutes.
17 (10) FALLER : Breakfast At Tiffany's (PG, 10.99 WS, CIC)
Moooooon Riverrr... (as Chevy Chase 'sang' in "Fletch" :)
The late George Peppard and Audrey Hepburn star in one of cinema's most
famous love stories as our hero and heroine who live in the same apartment
block get to know each other and one day visit Tiffany's jewellery store
early in the morning...
This video has been digitaly remastered, and now comes in its original
widescreen ratio of 1.75:1. More 'Moon River' for your money :)
16 (9) FALLER : City Slickers II (12, 10.99, Columbia TriStar)
Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern return to the Wild West, but this time with
Jon Lovitz (A League of Their Own) as their third hand instead of the original's
Bruno Kirby. Also making a comeback in the sequel is Jack Palance.
"But he died at the end of the first one!" I hear you cry. Easy to solve that
one. He comes back as his brother, and they're all on the trial for the gold
belonging to the original Palance character, hence the subtitle, "The Legend
of Curly's Gold".

The recent BBC adaption of Jane Austen's classic tale now on video.

Anyone who's heard of the Police Stop! tapes will know what these are about.
Both feature footage of police cameras showing how ordinary people can change
when they get behind the wheel of a car.
Both videos last 50 minutes, and "Police Go!" is geared more towards children.
13 NEW ENTRY : Wet Wet Wet - Live
This video contains live concert footage from their July 1995 concert at
Wembley Stadium, and runs for 60 minutes.
12 (8) FALLER : Introducing The Baldy Man (PG, PolyGram Video, 12.99)
Who is The Baldy Man? It's the character played by Rab C Nesbitt's Gregor
Fisher, and the character that he played in BBC2's Naked Video, in a series
of silent sketches a la Eric Sykes and Mr. Bean. For those who still don't
know which character I'm referring to, the Baldy Man only has one strand of
hair on his head, which he lovingly combs back and forth, and was used in a
TV advert for Hamlet cigars (before cigar advertising was banned).
11 NEW ENTRY : Not The Nine O'Clock News (12, 2 tapes, 12.99 each)
(Titles : Nice Video Shame About The Hedgehog, The Gorilla Kinda Lingers)
As the current series of "Smith and Jones" draws to a close, the show that
brought them to the limelight comes to video after a very long wait in two
compilations.
Griff Rhys-Jones, Mel Smith, Rowan Atkinson, Chris Emmett, Christopher Godwin,
John Gorman, Jonathan Hyde and Pamela Stephenson. How many more reasons do you
need to buy it? :)
10 (6) FALLER : Speed (15, 14.99 P&S, 15.99 Widescreen, Fox)
FBI agents Keanu Reeves and Jeff Daniels save a lift full of workers, in an
incredibly tense situation, and then get another call from the man with a crazy
plan, Dennis Hopper, who has rigged a bus to explode when the speed drops below
50MPH. Keanu gets hands-on experience on the bus, while Jeff co-ordinates things
from the office. Passenger Sandra Bullock ("Demolition Man") takes over the
wheel after the driver is shot, and as the bus approaches the impossible 50ft
gap in the middle of the freeway, tourist Alan Ruck ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off")
whinges "I shouldn't be here".
Nothing but action all the way, and some of the most amazing sound I've heard.
However, if Dennis Hopper had really wanted a challenge he should've made
Keanu take the same bus along the M6 Thelwall Viaduct during rush-hour when
it's down to one lane each way thanks to on-going bloody roadworks!
The Special Edition Widescreen Version also contains a 25-minute 'behind the
scenes' featurette about the making of "Speed".
9 (5) FALLER : Pulp Fiction (18, 14.99 P&S and WS, Buena Vista)
Tarantino's Oscar Winner for Best Original Screenplay has 3 stories woven
together. One is of two hitmen, one (John Travolta) who has to take his boss's
(Ving Rhames) wife (Uma Thurman) out for an evening, and both hitmen (Travolta
and Samuel L. Jackson) having to take care of their boss's briefcase and the two
guys who stole it (one of them being Frank Whaley).
The second is of a young couple (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer) who hold up a
diner, and the third is of a boxer (Bruce Willis proving he can act when he
puts his mind to it) about to have his final fight and then come home to the
woman he loves (Maria De Medieros) before embarking on a search for his father's
watch of which wouldn't be fair to detail the incredible story here.
The question still remains though : Just what is it in the briefcase?
(and why doesn't Harvey Keitel smile in pictures?)

Sadie Frost (seen just a couple of months ago in Pulp's Common People video)
stars alongside Jude Law as a couple of teenagers who go on many a joyride
about town while evading the police including top cop Jonathan Pryce.
Sean Bean also stars, and the director is Paul Anderson whose latest film,
"Mortal Kombat", based on the video game, is out now in the cinema.
6 (3) FALLER : The Mask (PG, 14.99, Entertainment in Video)
Jim Carrey's second hit film sees him cast as Stanley Ipkiss, a bank clerk
who leads a boring life, and tries to score points with co-worker Richard Jeni
as to who can score with the ladies. However, one day a vision appears in the
form of Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz), and Stanley will do anything to make her
his, including putting on a mask that one day flies into his apartment from
nowhere and transforms him into the man of the moment.
Although Jim Carrey didn't particularly impress me in Batman Forever, there
are some neat comic touches to be found here including a wealth of surround
sound material to blow your speakers away. Two such scenes are when he puts
on the mask for the first time, and later when he blows a guy's car windscreen
away with a small horn which has the words "Squeeze me" inscribed upon it.
Then Stanley gets a big horn (oo-er!) which shatters the windscreen to pieces.
A well-recommended video.
5 NEW ENTRY : Baddiel and Skinner's Fantasy Football League 2 (12, 12.99)
This second video from Baddiel and Skinner contains highlights from the first
and second series of their TV show plus out-takes and custom-shot footage.
The video runs for 90 minutes.
4 (2) FALLER : Men Behaving Badly Series 4 Parts 1 and 2 (15, 12.99 each, VCI)
Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey are back as the terrible flat-sharing twosome
with respective girl-friend/lust-objects Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash.
All 7 episodes from this series on two tapes including the time when Dorothy
(Caroline Quentin) had to recover from her appendix operation while Neil
Morrissey needed reading glasses. Where did the appendix end up? For those
of a nervous disposition, watch this video! :)
Also, what did Gary (Martin Clunes) feel when his best friend ended up in
best with his girlfriend? And will Leslie Ash ever give Neil even the time
of day?

2 NEW ENTRY : Maverick (PG, 14.99, Warner)
Mel Gibson stars as Brett Maverick in the big-screen version of the TV
series. This is a reunion in more ways than one....
- Danny Glover, Mel's partner in Lethal Weapon 1-3, makes a cameo appearance
near the start of the film.
- The director is Richard Donner, director of all three Lethal Weapon films
which starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.
- James Garner who played Brett Maverick in the original TV series makes a
cinema comeback as Mel's father.
The film has a basic plot. Mel rides into town needing several thousand dollars
to be able to play in a big card game tournament coming up soon. It's not
hard to work out if he makes it there, but it's a lot of fun finding out.
Along the way he comes across a love interest, Jodie Foster, and also
Graham Greene from Dances With Wolves and Thunderheart.
1 NEW ENTRY : The Star Wars Trilogy THX :
Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi
(U, 12.99 P&S, 13.99 WS, Fox)
Last year these films were released on video made from digital PAL masters,
and this year they're back with a vengeance in THX form.
For those who don't know, THX is a label usually given to NTSC American
laserdiscs which have been remastered to the best possible sound quality.
The video of the first in the trilogy, Star Wars, will only be available
between now and January 31st 1996, never to be seen again.
The videos of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will still be
available however.
The videos also contain a different Leonard Maltin interview with George Lucas.
In 1997, a new cut of Star Wars will come to the cinema, and later on video,
containing a few extra minutes of unseen footage.
The next trilogy of films in the Star Wars saga will come to the cinema in
1998, and will be based on the trilogy of books which come BEFORE the currently
available trilogy.
I've also seen in the shops a box-set of the three films in THX form, but
were all in P&S. The box-set sold for UKP 39.99, and at the moment I don't
have a specific date for a widescreen box-set, but it is rumoured to be coming
out in November.
To make sure, the catalogue numbers for the widescreen versions all end with
an "N", whereas the P&S end with a "S", and I double-checked this when I saw
the box-set. Also, the box-set isn't labelled 'widescreen' anywhere.
As soon as I have a definite date for a widescreen box-set, I shall include
it in my new releases section.

20 Cinema Paradiso : Special Edition (15, 15.99, Tartan)
What was once only available as a box-set is now a single-tape as well.
A young boy lives in a small Italian town where the only pastime is going to
the cinema. He is overjoyed when the projectionist allows him into the
projection booth to show him the mysteries of the movie-making which ignites
his life-long love of the movies.
This version is extended by 50 minutes and continues from where the original
left off and we can now learn of what happened to Toto's true love...
19 Dazed And Confused (18, 10.99, CIC)
I went to see this last year at Manchester's Cornerhouse cinema after a few
drinks, so I was sort-of dazed when I saw it. It's an excellent film, but I
was in two minds about it before I saw it as I wasn't impressed with Richard
Linklater's previous, "Slacker".
This film is set in the 70's and could be seen as a 1990's (or 1970's :)
version of George Lucas's "American Graffiti" and follows a group of
college kids on their last night before graduation, and everything they get
up to. The stars include Milla Jovovich (Return to the Blue Lagoon).
Miss this one at your peril.
18 Blackadder Completes Vol 1-4 (15, 13.99 each, BBC)
Each series on a single tape for 3quid less than the double-tape sets.
17 True Lies (15, 14.99, CIC; 34.99 WS PAL LD, Pioneer)
Arnie's back on top form after the flop of "Last Action Hero" (which I liked :)
as Harry Tasker, a boring computer salesman with a sideline job as a secret
service agent - something his wife, Jamie Lee Curtis, knows nothing about,
but his latest mission to stop Art Malik blowing up the world accidentally
manages to bring her along for the ride when she gets involved in some
extra-marital affairs with Bill Paxton. Some of the SFX seem quite plausible...,
only some :) Tia Carerre, Charlton Heston and Eliza Dushku also star.
Definitely a video for the home cinema fans.
