The RENTAL chart !!
-------------------
10 NEW ENTRY : Clueless (12, CIC)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

Babe-of-the-moment Alicia Silverstone plays Cher, the most popular teenage
girl at Beverly Hills High, who is suddenly about to discover 'true love'
when a couple of new hunks arrive at the school. 93 mins.

9 NEW ENTRY : The Scarlet Letter (15)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

Roland Joffe's tale of a beautiful woman tapped in a New World colony in the
Americas, who finds true love with the Reverend Dimsdale, but their affair
sparks off trouble for the other settlers. 129 mins

Stars Demi Moore, Gary Oldman, Robert Duvall and Joan Plowright.

8 (8) NON-MOVER : Waterworld (12, CIC)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

Kevin Costner refutes all claims that this movie cost $180 million to make.
He states that it only cost $175 million. :)

7 (5) FALLER : Mortal Kombat (15)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

(Widescreen PAL LD available. Ask for details).

The film of the game, starring Christopher Lambert, where all the characters
meet for the "Mortal Kombat" tournament. I presume then that if it's a contest,
then "there can be only one" :)

6 (7) CLIMBER : Die Hard With a Vengeance (15, Buena Vista)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

McClane is back with a big Brucey bonus, as Simon Gruber, played casually
by Jeremy Irons plans to rob the entire gold reserves from the main bank in
New York, and he's got quite a cunning plan up his sleeve.

In the first film, directed by John McTiernan, who returns to direct here
too, you'll remember Bruce dropped Simon's brother Hans (played superbly by
Alan Rickman) off the top of the Nakatomi building.

Simon's a bit peeved about this, so this film stems from the script, "Simon
Says", written by Jonathan Hensleigh, in which Irons firsts detenonates a
huge bomb in a department store to get the attention of the police, and then
sets Bruce a challenge. He has to wear a sandwich board in the middle of
Harlem with a very non-politically correct statement on the front and back.

He almost gets offed, but would the main hero die within the first few minutes?
Of course not. He is saved at the last minute by Zeus Carver, played by
Samuel L Jackson, who also joined Bruce Willis for "Pulp Fiction", but they
never shared screen time together in that film.

What ensues is a trail of destruction, bad language and violence, all the
things a great action film needs, as Simon sets Bruce one challenge after
another, threatening to set off bigger bombs around the city, until they meet
face to face for the last time...

To be honest, this isn't quite as good as the first two, but is worth seeing
to give your surround sound system a workout.

What's been cut though? The safe money is placed on a scene in a lift, which
is quite confusing when compared with the uncut NTSC LD, and anyone whose
seen the UK cinema version will have seen the cut version. Other scenes
may include on the boat when Bruce has a scrap with a tall Russian guy,
and when Irons' mute girlfriend Katya (the delectable Sam Phillips) offs
a security guard quite concisely :)

There will apparently by a widescreen version, with slightly more extra
footage than this cut version, but still not as much as the version everyone
in the US gets to see. Extra footage will include a bit more of the lift scene,
but not as much as we'd like, and we won't see when Bruce finally offs the
last guy, in which he gets tons of blood over his face.

This completely goes against what happened with "Die Hard 2" when the P&S
version was a cut 15-cert, but the BBFC allowed an uncut 18-cert release of
the widescreen version.

Buena Vista are doing well for widescreen lately. They started with "Pulp
Fiction", then "Leon", and in the Autumn this film will be released. Another
film set for a WS retail release is Tony Scott's excellent "Crimson Tide"
with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, but the film hasn't even been released
to rent yet. The cinema release was last November, so rental will probably
be May, and retail in November.

Would you believe me if I said all P&S and WS videos of the first two films
had been deleted? Strange but true. What's going on Fox?

Dominator rating : 8/10 (probably less for a P&S version :)

5 (10) CLIMBER : The Usual Suspects (18, Polygram)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak and Pete Postlewaite
in what has been hailed as one of the best thrillers in a long time.

I saw it recently on video and would certainly recommend it giving it 8/10.

I won't spoil it by giving away anything, but when it was released in the
cinema, it was unfairly compared to "Reservoir Dogs", because it's about
five guys who do a heist, which goes wrong...which sounds like RD but it's
not as you'll see when you watch it.
If you like a good, tense thriller, check this one out.

Now, last week I wondered that as the cinema ratio for this film was 2.35:1,
was it was shot in hard matte 2.35:1, eg Panavision, or Super-35?

I'm glad to say it was shot in Super-35, so for the most part, the matte
is opened to give a very comfortable picture. However, only two short
scenes look like they were the sort of P&S you'd expect from a hard-matte
2.35:1 film.

Both are in the police station, in Chazz Palmenteri's office.

Apparently the US video is surprisingly, and noticeably, a regular P&S job,
but if that's the case, then why?

4 (4) NON-MOVER : Species (18)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

Newcomer Natasha Hendridge plays an alien babe who causes a lot of bother for
a team of scientists who go to find out what's going on. Cast includes Ben
Kingsley and Michael Madsen.

3 (3) NON-MOVER : Under Siege 2 (18)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

Steven Seagal returns as the cook Casey Ryback, but on a train this time,
offing villains including major bad guy Eric Bogosian (Talk Radio).

2 (2) NON-MOVER : Braveheart (15, Fox) *WIDESCREEN VERSION AVAILABLE*
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.36)

(Widescreen PAL LD available. Ask for details).

Mel Gibson's five-time Oscar winning three-hour epic of the story of William
Wallace who avenges the death of his Scottish relatives, and forms an army
to take on the might of the English.

Encore Entertainment were granted the release of their Widescreen PAL
Laserdisc of the film on the same day of the rental video's release by
Fox Video. This is the first time this has happened for a Fox title, and
depending on how it sells (which by all accounts should be by the bucketload)
will determine how many more PAL Laserdiscs are released on the same day as
the rental video.

The PAL Laserdisc is in widescreen (ratio 2.35:1) with a theatrical trailer,
and the video has been released in both P&S and WIDESCREEN.
Widescreen rental videos are very few and far between, and not many shops
carry them, so if you own a rental shop, and stock the widescreen video,
email me and you'll get a mention next time.

Now the question on everyone's lips is "is the film cut" ?
The answer is yes and no, because to get a 15-certificate only one scene
has been reframed. It involves a character having their throat slit, but
apparently Mel Gibson shot the scene from in front, so you see everything,
and from behind, so you don't. I understand that it's the latter that's been
used in the UK cinema/video/laserdisc release. Apparently the rest of the
film is rather bloodthirsty too.

1 (1) NON-MOVER : Apollo 13 (PG, CIC)
(PastelBlue Pre-Release Price : UKP 76.30)

One small step for man, and one gigantic problem for Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon,
and Bill Paxton as their space trip doesn't quite go to plan on the 13th day,
at the 13th hour, at the 13th minute...etc.

As for a widescreen video version, such is as yet unknown, but if it's just a
regular fullscreen version, then this won't be such a problem for the following
reason. The film was filmed with the "Super 35" process in which a 1.33:1 image
(same ratio as a TV set) is filmed, and the picture is masked to give a 2.35:1
image.

For special-effects films which have been shot with Super 35, (eg. True Lies,
The Abyss, and Terminator 2) the special-effects sequences are shot at a ratio
close to the intended cinema ratio, so they will have to be P&S'd for the
non-widescreen video.

Is the video Worlds Greatest Coaster Thrills available in Honolulu, and
where abouts. I need to find out, as it is unavailable in New Zealand and
I have relatives about to go to Hawaii, and will purchase this if I can
tell them exactly where to go. I would really appreciate an answer

Thank you Judie
