Hi all laserdisc fans !

I'm the shop owner of Cinedream Home Cinema store in Antwerp,
Belgium... and of course i'm also a big laserdisc fan since the
ninethies. This gave me the idea to oranize a big laserdisc weekend
for all the laserdisc fans that wish to talk about "the good old
days", trade discs and hardware, have a look at some nice laserdisc
demo's of rare discs, enjoy all these things on the big screen... and
of course have a good snack and drink with the fellow fans and ex-
laserdisc shop owners.

Therefore, we will be holding a big laserdisc weekend, on the 19th and
20th of July, in Cinedream Antwerp (Belgium, Europe).

I know lot's of you of course don't live in Belgium or even Europe,
but perhaps you may of course give us some input on what we absolutely
need to do on this day ! (hints and tips are very welcome)
euh... no... we won't do any laserdisc frisbee challenges or laserdisc
shooting games ;-)))

For those of you who wish to attend, feel free to visit our dedicated
page wich will be updated with the schedule really soon:
http://www.cinedream.be/laserdisc.shtml (it's in dutch, but we do
speak english, french and german also)

Please keep in mind, the date on the site still says the 12th and 13th
of july, but we'll have to move it another week to the 19th and 20th
of july.
Our website will be updated on monday with this, people who have
already subscribed will be notified.

Of course it's a completely free event ! So don't hesitate to join if
you want.

For the schedule, here's what i already had in mind:

- present current and active laserdis sites on the web (lddb, this
newsgroup, ebay, ...) and show the possibilties of keeping your
collection alive
- demo's of rare box sets and special editions from all over the world
- demo's of high-end hardware in combination with a big-screen high-
end home cinema setup (and also discuss how to get the most out of
your ld's)
- a little trade and buy where you can trade and/or buy/sell discs
with fellow collectors...
- etc...

Below you'll find our announcement in Dutch, for those who speak
it ;-)

Greetings to you all !

Nicolas aka "laserlord"

Laserdisc Weekend @ Cinedream Antwerpen !

Before HD there was SD, before SD there was LD -
Let's celebrate the Laserdisc !

To be continued... very soon !!!

Sounds cool and I hope it turns out to be a big success for you!

I kinda wish recordable LDs were still available -- I have what is
possibly the last existing 16mm movie print of "Antwerp X" taken
during WW-II. This movie features the destruction of the V-1
buzz bombs (aka cruise missiles) in the air by my Dad's artillery
group for which he was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre
proudly worn on his uniform even when he served on the Joint
Chiefs of Staff (at the Pentagon) during the 1950s.

I last saw the movie 30+ years ago when I was able to use the
projector room at the San Jose (Calif.) Public Library since I
don't have a movie projector at home. If anyone has ideas of
how to *inexpensively* convert such a print to, say, a DVD,
please let me know. Last time I checked, such conversion
services were astronomically priced.

Hello!

Wow! A two day convention devoted to laserdiscs and their history. And no
admission charge - that's extremely cool. I wish I could be there. Sadly, I
live in Hicksville, New York. I'd love to come to see your convention but I
simply can't make it. I can't take the time off from work and as I'm sure
many are aware air travel is super expensive right now. Here are some ideas:

<--------------------------------------------->

< - a little trade and buy where you can trade >
< and/or buy/sell discs >
< with fellow collectors... >

<--------------------------------------------->
If your going have access to a large space such as a hotel ball room or
university gymnasium, you may want to make arrangements with a professional
party rental company so you have tables and chairs that are all uniform in
appearance. This would be your conventions "Dealer's Room"

Focus on special guests. For example, if sombody from one of the Japanese
companies was comming to speak, you would would want to have a picture and a
two or three paragraphs about this person. This should include a bit or
history and what they're currently doing in the electronics industry.

Have a mission statement. Below, you'll find a mission statement from a
Science Fiction convention we have every year, here on New York's, Long
Island. It's called I-CON. Put simply I-CON means "Island Convention".
What is I-CON?

Attended by over 6,000 people each year, I-CON is a three day festival,
designed to encourage literacy, creativity and interest in science and
technology through science fiction and its related genres. Programming at
I-CON spans a wide range of topics and interests, including science fiction,
fantasy, horror, Japanese animation (otherwise known as Anime), science and
technology, comic books, and medieval reenactment.

Guest speakers are invited from around the world to share their experiences
in their fields, information about any new or upcoming projects and their
insights into the genre with their fans. Over the course of the convention,
guests typically will participate in panel discussions, give workshops and
demonstrations, sign autographs, and interact with their fans on a one on
one basis in such venues as the Awards Banquet. With so much to offer, I-CON
is able to appeal to a diverse audience, including college students, senior
citizens and families with young children.

I-CON (with a hyphen) is presented annually by ICON Science Fiction, INC
(without a hyphen; hereafter referred to as "ICON") and the I-CON Campus
Chapter. ICON is a not-for-profit corporation which is a legal entity
separate from New York State and the State University of New York at Stony
Brook.

<--- End of mission statement --->

Have a dedicated web site with lots of information and have a staff to keep
this information fresh. There's way too much detail to write here. As a
sample of what I'm talking about, I suggest you visit the I-Con web site.
It's true that our convention was at the beginning of April bu an archive of
the web site is still poster. here is the link:
http://iconsf.org/archive/icon27/index.php

Have events well organized. Again, it's too much to write about, here is a
link to a booklet that was available for free to everybody that attend the
con: http://iconsf.org/archive/icon27/I-CON27-pocket_schedule.pdf

I hope this helps,

Best Regards,

Bill N. - New York
