I had posted a story about a repair to a Sony MDP-600 which had sound
problems.
Now, I wish to share another repair adventure: the Pioneer CLD-59
ELITE.
I had purchased this player, complete with remote and instructions,
for a cool $30 from eBay.
There's just one catch, though: it's totally dead. When you plug it
in, it does nothing. The "standby" indicator doesn't even light.
At first, I thought it would have been D6 in the power supply circuit,
which is a thyristor diode in the primary side.
However, upon examination, D6 was still good and the fuse was not
blown.
I remove the entire power supply and did some testing of the diodes,
regulators, and transistors. I found one possible culprit, D40, which
appeared to be a zener diode.
A precursory check revealed that it was shorted. I removed the diode
out of the circuit and tested it again and, sure enough, it was
shorted.
As luck would have it, I had a power supply from a Sony DVP-S360 DVD
player for parts and D212 in the circuit is the exact same diode as
D40 in the CLD-59 and it was tested and found to be good!
I soldered the replacement diode in, put everything back together and
WAMO! The player is working again!
A great buy for $30 and about 30 minutes of my time.
So now I have a total of six functioning players, three of which I
repaired on my own.
Sony MDP-600
Pioneer LD-660
Pioneer CLD-59
These three are players I have successfully repaired.
The other three:
Pioneer CLD-3070
Pioneer DVL-700
Pioneer DVL-V888
Hopefully, I will also be the owner of a Panasonic LX-H680, which will
bring the count to 7.
I'm a happy camper!
