The 7020 is the same basic player as the CLD-97. The 7020 has the
pretty McIntosh cosmetics/front plate and and has an added AC-3 RF
output. However, you lose the quick turn (theatre mode) button on the
front like you get with the 97, and the 97 (and the S2) can be modded
to have an AC-3 RF output for a nominal fee. From what I've read, the
picture quality is the same for both players.
Since it has already been established by Kurtis, who owns/owned both
the 97 and S2, that he likes the S2 picture slightly better than the
97 picture... well, make your own conclusions! The only advantage of
the 97 over the S2 is the two-sided play. I don't mind flipping the
disc with my S2, as it gives me a chance to take a potty and/or food
break.
As far as longevity goes, nothing lasts forever. Everything (except
perhaps asbestos) dies eventually!

The S2 has a better analog look, Picture looks very analog and smooth and
tracks very good but single sided. The 97/7020 without using DNR has the
lowest visual noise of all the dual sided players I've seen.
97's are cheaper and the 7020 is really a 97 with no McIntosh extra's. It
will last as long as the 97, not as long as McIntosh audio components.
I can sell you a 97 w/AC-3 added if you want one.

I never said that it would be your reference player!
