correcting brightness flicker in old movies

I was watching a 1920s movie (Metropolis) and the brightness
fluctuates pretty badly. I guess they did not have a steady
light source when making the print from the interneg.
Now I would think in 2010, that it is possible to smooth
out this flicker in old movies (especially since they
are monochrome). Is this now done when remastering the
old classics for DVD?

Yes it is very possible and is done often. Not only the flicker
removal but the frame rate adjustment (so your WWI soldiers don't look
like they're all doped up on speed). I'm sure a web search could turn
