Thanks, Mike
Then I got the free DTS demo disc the other day and get the "NO DISC" and
"This type of disc cannot be played" messages. I started getting suspicious
that there is something wrong with my player, so I took the disc to Best Buy
and asked them to try it for me. They tried on their A310 and it played
fine. When I got home, I tried all of my discs (about 40), including both
sides if it had both WS & P&S, or if it contained additional material on the
second side, or the two I have that are flippers. Everything seemed to work
fine - all the discs could be read on all sides, they didn't break up or
freeze, and I could access the menus, special features, etc. with the
exception of Blazing Saddles and Eraser on the P&S sides as mentioned above,
and of course the demo disc.
I called Panasonic and the technical support person said that the laser is
probably out of alignment. It's in the hands of UPS right now on it's way
to a factory authorized service center in PA for repair.
You might want to get yours in and have it checked out. You said 3 months,
though. If it's over 90 days and you didn't buy the extended warranty, you
will have to pay labor charges. Mine was at 88 days when I contacted
Panasonic, so I should get it covered under warranty. I didn't buy the
extended warranty either. I have had 3 laserdisc players in 17 years (the
first was an early Magnavox model that had problems playing warped discs,
but that was the technology at that point, not a failure of the player,
which I later upgraded to a Pioneer when they solved this problem, then in
1991, I bought one with digital play and double-sided play features) and
none have ever been repaired. I figured that since the technology is
similar, and similar to CD players, that I shouldn't have trouble with it.
WRONG!
All I can say is that they had better fix this problem, whether it's an
alignment problem, or whatever. I bought the A310 for the built in DD
decoder and DTS output and paid more for it. I paid too much to have
problems with it.
By the way, I called 800.com, where I had purchased it from, to ask if they
were aware of problems with this model. The guy said he'd heard of a lot of
problems with the A110, but none with the A310. I guess I got the lemon on
that one!
Good luck!

Do people recommend unplugging the player when its not in use? I have it
plugged into a surge protector right now. I have no problems as of yet. It's a
Panasonic A110.

You may want to get ahold of your receipt and take that player back to
the store. That is an *odd* occurence and something that I don't
consider normal!

The guts of the A310 and A110 are the same. The only time that you won't
have problems with one or the other is when you're referring to the DD
decoder in the A310. The three problems that I have on my A110 are also
present on my friends A310...
