I just hope they don't get their filthy hands on the new transfer MGM HK
came up with for the directors cut. Then there will be yet another AB
edition in the US.

Yeah, that would just be TERRIBLE if Anchor Bay could finally make a better
quality version available! I'd hate to have the option of owning a version of
the director's cut that looks great!

Here's a quick history off all the Army of Darkness DVDs for
Region 1, listed in order of release:
1)The Universal disc. Barebones and non-anamorphic
I believe. Had the original poster art though.
2)The 2-disc Limited Edition.
- The first disc is the theatrical release, anamorphic
with DD5.1 sound. The original ending is included
as an extra, as well as a behind-the-scenes documentary.
- The 2nd disc is the "Original Director's Cut," with
scenes taken from a sub-par print. Also includes 4
scenes still not in either cut,as well as a
full-length Commentary with Sam Raimi and Bruce
Campbell. Ivan Raimi joins them latter in the track.
Also features storyboards as a PIP shown during the
feature.
This was released in a limited run of 30,000 in the US,
and a smaller run of 4,000 in Canada. This is the only
other release that has the original poster art.
3)The Theatrical DVD.
The exact same as disc one of the above LE. Released at the
same timeas the LE, this was what Anchor Bay intended to
be it's permanent release.
The cover art for this is a crappy montage of movie scenes.
4)The Limited Edition "Director's Cut" 1-disc DVD
The exact same as disc two of the original 2-disc LE.
This was released several months later to help abate
demand for the now OOP 2-disc. This release was limited
to 40,000 copies in the US. The cover art is alternate
artwork of Ash torso-up with arms outstretched.
5)The "Bootleg" DVD
The exact same as disc two of the original 2-disc LE,
and of the other LE. Released because the second LE
release still didn't abate demand for the Director's
Cut disc. Anchor Bay kept this one in print.
The cover art replicates a brown-paper wrapper
covering up the 1-disc LE art.
6)The "Boomstick" 2-disc DVD
This is an exact re-release of the original LE
(release #2), appearently because of demand for
both discs in a 2-disc package.
The cover art is Photoshop Hell.
Note that all but the first DVD are Anchor Bay releases.
AB clearly underestimated demand for the Director's Cut,
and have been making amends ever since. Appearently AB
has kept the original poster art (the best) limited to
the original LE as a way to pacify those who forked over
for what they thought was gonna be a limited release.

cleaned-up version that MGM released in (I think) Japan, so we can all simply
say "buy the Boomstick edition" to people who want the best version in R1. No
more of the "buy this one and this one" nonsense.

What about the "Book Of The Dead" edition?
This one has the case that's modeled after the
book in the flick made of skin and has both
Dolby Digitial EX and DTS ES 6.1.

Yeah, because who would want a good transfer of the film made from high
quality source elements to be released in Region 1?

Certainly not me. I've just ordered the R3 DVD of AOD, and I want to
be able to smugly look down upon those without region-free players.
No, not really, an R1 of the new transfer would be cool
