My Apex doesn't like DVD-rw, which came as an unpleasant surprise.

Any opinions on the most versatile (inexpensive) players?

My Apex didn't like much of anything, including working.

Have a look at the Oppo 970. http://oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd.html
Of course, it might not fit your definition of inexpensive, but after playing
around with cheap players that all died quickly, I decided to get serious and
I'm not sorry in the least.

It depends. Do you have a budget greater than $25 this time around?

Do you know somebody with a high speed internet connection? You can
do your own fucking research starting with typing something clever like
"dvd player" into a review search site like cnet.com, epinions.com
or shopping.com. Or search google for "dvd player comparison". Then on
each player you'd consider go back to google and search for the make and
model followed by the magic word "review".

Can't go wrong with a Philips brand dvd player. Plus some of them
can be made to play other dvd regions too and divx. Try the
5140/37 costs $50 from Amazon.com shipped.

Not surprising. Many recent Apex are crap. The last 2 Apex I've come
across, one smoked up before the warranty went. The replacement also
smoked up and I fixed it by replacing a $0.10 diode in the power
supply. Still works 2 years going now. Still won't play anything
that isn't pressed.

Second Apex were LOUD. When it plays, it makes enough noise to drown
out my normally noisy PC. (PC has dual Delta 120mm 235 CFM fans,
which ranks up with dust buster in noise level)

No such thing as inexpensive and verastile player.

you could try www.videohelp.com under the dvd player for reviews of
almost all DVD players.

Cheapie DVD players under $50 US are mostly crap. You've got a chance to get
something that works OK if it costs over $50.

.........You do know that Usenet is part of the Internet, don't
you?.......posting a question on a Usenet group is one of the ways of doing
research on the Internet. It's done all of the time.

So is doing your own research. You are aware that there are sites like
google that can provides results to search strings, right? A lot has improved
over the last twenty years. Usenet isn't the end all.

Do your own research and then when you have an intelligent question
or two come back. "I'm a lazy asshole; tell me what to buy" is a lousy way
to introduce yourself.

The apex isn't even a $30 player.

That is correct. There was a time, many years ago, when usenet was
a place you could go to get help from friendly, intelligent, courteous
people. You have just provided a fine example of why that is no longer
the case.

There was also a time when the barrier to entry to Usenet was
considerably higher than it is now, requiring at least a modicum of
technical skill and know-how. It's no coincidence that these two
circumstances were related.

Just spend the $100 and get a Sony (as much as I hate Sony) 5 disc
up-converting changer. It plays it all, remembers where it was on
each tray position, and has high end outputs in both audio and video
that fall just short of an HDMI out.

Can't beat the value of the item for the price, and it has a nice
slim form factor.

The OPPO 970 is worth every last cent! I have yet to find anything
that it WON'T play.

You get what you pay for in this world. Spend the $149 (plus
shipping). It's a steal at that price for what it delivers. See
Widescreen Review March 2007 for a review.

Yes.

You can see the details at their website: http://www.oppodigital.com/

I have their DV-981HD, but it's got the same guts as their DV-970 series.
