I have a DVD that has these folders/files:

VIDEO_RM
VIDEO_RM.BUP
VIDEO_RM.DAT
VIDEO_RM.IFO

ViDEO_TS
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB

It plays video and audio just fine.

When I do a dvd copy (using NERO 7) , the result is fine.

When I do a rip from the original to a single .avi file using AoA DVD
ripper, and then make a new DVD disk (using NERO 7) , I get:

ViDEO_TS
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB

and the disk plays video, but no audio.

What am I doing wrong?

I forgot to say that AoA made a .avi which played video and audio fine
also. But when NERO7 made a new DVD from the .avi, it lost the audio,
and of course the folder/file structure on the final disk differed
from the original.

Sorry but why are you doing this.

If you can do a copy using Nero7 and it works why do you want to then do a
copy using somthing else and than make a copy that is not working.

is the point to make a copy, or to find out how to make nero 7 make a copy
from an avi? in which case why???

if you had a different source that you wanted to make into a DVD then maybe
I could see the point. but please tell.

I'm sorry I asked. I thought to learn something.
Forget it.

I think he is just curious as to why you are doing things differently
if you have a method which works. It's all way too confusing for me
:O)

My guess, (and it is only that) would be that when you rip the DVD to an
AVI file, it is encoding the audio in such a way the Nero can't handle
it when re-encoding back to DVD format. You might try looking at the AVI
file with AVICodec to see how the audio is encoded.

I was not having a go as such, but any supposition as to why it is not
working is only that, a posh word for a guess.

I was hoping the op would come back with a really good reason to have to do
what he was doing and by that making the problem worth trying to sort out.
