Subject: TMPGEnc DVD Author update error
I am trying to install an update that fails with a report that states

"error 1324. The path My Pictures contains an invalid character"

Does anyone know what is causing this and how it might be corrected?

I am using TMPGEnc DVD Author Version 1.5.20.62 and am trying to update to
1.5.34.89. I have not used this application for some time and need to create
DVD Dual layer so I might actually need a newer upgrade. I find the various
versions confusing. Does anyone know if I need to purchase TDA again to get
DL DVDs created?

TIA

JS

I'm afraid that 1.5 can't author double layer disks.
In fact the only real difference between 1.5 and 1.6
is that 1.6 can author double layer disks.

You can get a 30 day trial of 1.6, but it's discontinued
so you can't buy a serial number for it.   So for thirty
days you will have an authoring program that works the
way you are used to and can make DL DVDs.

http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tda16.html

It would cost $90 for 3.0 with DivX Authoring and some
new input options as well as subtitles and 16:9 menus.

Luck;
    Ken

Thanks. That clears things up. I have not been keeping up with the software
as it worked fine on 4.7 G DVDs. I guess it is time to research some of the
newer applications instead of having to pay so much just to burn DLs. I have
Nero 6 Ultra which I believe will do what I need.

Strictly true, as written ... or is it?

It is certainly true that if you just author a DL-DVD in TMPGEnc DVD Author
v1.5 and burn it using earlier versions of Nero such as v6.3, the result may
not work at all, or very well, in your player.  However, you can author in
v1.5, adjust the result with free software such as PGCEdit, and burn it
using free software such as ImgBurn, and the result will work, at least in
my player  -  I've done it.

For the OP, there are some problems with DL, the two most important being:

1)    The fact that older DVD Players may not recognise a DL-DVD-R, and
therefore have to be conned into thinking they are playing a conventional,
commercial, non-recordable, DL-DVD, which can only be done by changing the
'book type'  -  Nero v6 will not let you do this, ImgBurn v2.3.1.0 will.  If
your player is new enough to recognise the recordable version in its own
right, you may not need to do this.

2)    The absence or position of the 'layer-break' instruction in the DVD
files as authored.  PGCEdit v7.4 will allow you to insert this at a
convenient point where disruption to the action can be minimised  -  for
example, at a quiet moment when the picture is blank.  AFAICT, the problem
with just authoring using DVD Author v1.5 and burning with Nero is that DVD
Author doesn't insert the layer-break, Nero does, and you have no control of
where, so there may be a stutter at that point.

The one I made plays fine but stutters as it FastFowards, and I think the
reason for this may be the difference between the media characteristics of
the DL-DVD-R and of the commercial DVDs it's pretending to be.  Perhaps this
causes a higher than usual error rate which the player can cope with at
normal speeds but not when FF-ing.

Note that all the earlier attempts that would not run in my player could be
read in my PC's burner, so are useful in their own right as backups for the
one that worked  -  that is, it could be re-made from them if the need ever
arises.

True, some of the time, and your post should be of great
help to the OP if he gives it a try.  Not all posters are willing
to learn what's needed to use such an approach or expend
the effort involved.  But my statement above is true, the only
difference between 1.5 and 1.6 is the ability of 1.6 (all by
itself) to author a DL DVD.

My pick-up truck can't travel over a body of water. Just
because it can cross a bridge, or board a ferry, doesn't make
it amphibious.  Programs like PgcEdit and DvdReMake, can
let you modify an authored DVD, in many ways, but their
existence doesn't mean you can say TDA itself has all the
capabilities you can add, with such tools.

Great post though, and I wish I had thought to mention such
an approach.

Luck;
    Ken

Point accepted ...

Thanks ...

BTW, if memory serves, Ken, was it not you who worked out the format of the
TDA files?  Around the time of my original investigation, ISTR finding a
link in an old post that purported to lead to some prog or other that could
manipulate the files, extract and insert images and so on, but it no longer
seemed to lead anywhere.  Was that you, and could you help out?

I wanted it because I wanted to make a DVD with a single menu for 25 tracks
with the ability to play them randomly, whereas the TDA max on a single menu
is of course 24.  I've solved it by other means now, but it was rather long
winded  -  a TDA hack might have been quicker ...

I think I know what you are referring to, but that was a
program to read the .tme template files.  It was written by
a Brazilian IIRC, and it may have been Mark Burns who
first found the program and posted in a NG.  The idea
was to be able to create a template to add items to be
selectable when creating your own theme, but that never
paned out.  Besides, it was too easy to just make and
keep your own menu items to use as replacements, in
any theme.

There are only single page layouts of up to 24 selection
items per menu page.  The DVD standard only allows
36 items total (including the navigation buttons), so you
could add, maybe 8 more selection items.  You can have
more than one page to a logical menu, though.

Luck;
    Ken

P.S. a google search for "tmereader" should bring up
references to some of the original posts.

Ah, yes, now you mention I think it was the template files rather than the
authoring files.

Ok, I'll try and find it again.

Thanks for your help.
