Japan's national public broadcasting organization NHK plans
to broadcast portions of the London Olympics this summer in
7,680×4,320 resolution and the initial test of the
technology showed off the ability to produce surround sound
with 22.2 channels of audio.

but not broadcast in the sense that anyone outside the industry will be
able to receive it.

Just my luck. I'm 20.2 ears short of what I need to benefit from this.
Dang!

Impressive. Not really practical for a smaller home, but would potentially
be awesome for large auditoriums or theaters or convention center rooms.

It's interesting. For the 7680x4320 resolution, on a 135" diagonal 16:9
screen, the pixel size is just under 0.4mm. For a person with 20/20
vision, the acuity distance is 4.4 feet, which is a little close--the
field of view would be over 96 degrees.

For the 4096x2160 resolution and the same screen size, the "ideal"
viewing distance based on visual acuity is 8.8 feet, which gives a nice
58 degree field-of-view. So I can see projectors with this becoming
popular for home theaters.

"The BBC executive who heads the organisation's coverage - told reporters
that three 50-foot tall screens will be placed in areas around England, and
those who want to feel as though they are at the stadium will be able to do
so through the clarity and resolution that these Super Hi Vision screens
offer. Delivering cutting-edge technology to viewers who may be unable to
make the games, the Beeb's move will give them the chance to feel as if they
are watching at the stadium even though they are not physically there".
