Hello all. New to the group.
I have a question. A group of my friends and I are looking at going to
Vegas for a few days of Spring Break (1st week of March). Where should
we stay and what should we do. Some Information on us: All between 23
and 21, limited College budget, and three of the four have never been to
vegas before. Of course we plan to gamble, but what are the other
attractions we shouldn't miss? Thanks in advance for your help.

You may be too late to have much choice. For the cheapest rooms (not
the best or newest or fanciest) off the strip any of the Station
properties. Downtown try Lady Luck, California, Gold Spike. (once again
these are not glamorous places) On the strip Westward Ho, Stardust,
Excalibur, Frontier, or Holiday Inn.
As far as things to do, Hoover dam, Red Rock canyon, Fremont street
Experience, and of course, visiting all the hotels on the strip.
You may want to visit sites at www.lvol.com, www.whats-on.com,
www.lvshowbiz.com to see what they have going on when you are there.

Wish I was going

Welcome to the best NG on usenet Jerad!

As Bob has already pointed out, you may have waited a bit too long to book
your spring break vacation. You are pretty much limited to Monday arrival
and Friday departure, although a few places still have weekend slots open,
their prices jump dramatically. For example at http://www.lvrs.com Four
Queens is advertised at 45 dollars a night double occ, which jumps to 109
Fri and Sat (one of the few hotels that still has space on the weekend).
Even Circus Circus (the last place I'd recommend for your group) is 45
during the week and jumps to 145 on weekend.

If you are staying Monday through Friday here are some rates at hotels on
the strip (I'd recommend the strip since this is your first time, although
you should catch the Fremont Street Experience which begins every hour on
the hour after 6pm downtown). These are all based on double occupancy which
would make it the most expensive per person, I'm sure if you went quad it
would be like 5-15 per person per night extra (all via lvrs.com):

Harrahs 59.00 (good location, nice hotel)
Sahara 39.00 (newly remodeled, not so hot location)
Stratosphere 49.00 (nice clean place, awful location)
Stardust (Tower) 59.00 (decent location)
Stardust (Motor Inn) 32.00 (a great value, would be my choice)
Barbary Coast 59.00 (great location)
Frontier 55.00 (near Harrahs)
San Remo 59.00 (near MGM and south strip hotels)

For guys on a budget, the Beach is a great evening spot which gets hopping
late (after 10). Lotsa hot babes go there and work there. When downtown,
check out Tony Roma's at the Fremont for ribs, beer, onion soup and an
onion loaf--yum! Club Rio at the Rio is a dressy nightclub with real hammy
babes hangin out there (you may have to stand in a long line). Definitely
check out the antique auto museum at the Imperial Palace if you are into
that kind of thing.

Hope this helps, I'm sure others will chime in with useful info!

Have a great time!

Yikes. Most of the hotels above are DUMPS. Sure they're cheap, but
yuck...they're bad enough to ruin an otherwise fun trip. For cheap
rooms that are also CLEAN, try Bob's first suggestion: the Station
Casinos (Palace Station is closest to the strip). Their rooms are
typically advertised at $39/night on weekdays, and their casino rules
and minimums are very favorable, making them a favorite among locals.

All of these are excellent suggestions. If you are going to take the
Hoover Dam tour (you should!), take the hard hat tour, and make
reservations in advance. If you are flying in, I would also recommend
renting a car if you can (being under 25 makes it tricky)...'cause
there's lots of driving involved in travelling the city to enjoy all the
cheap fun. If you can't rent a car, I would recommend very comfortable
shoes. :-)

Have fun...

Geezus these are 21-23 year old college kids on a tight budget. Doubt they're
going to Vegas to go on no damn dam tour and probably don't have enuff to rent
a car. The first suggestions were absolutely valid and they ain't dumps. Might
also try Maxim, Casino Royale, Gold Coast. Those will get you closer to mid
strip, but you may find that selections are very limited at this point.
Good luck.

Mowbie, I'm happy to say we're in agreement for once: Casino Royale is an
excellent place for the young and budget conscious. Although I'm not either
of those things (ok, I guess I'm relatively young at 30), I still like CR
for its cheap games ($.25) and lively crowd. I have just as much fun
playing quarter roulette as I do $5.00 roulette (ooh, whatta big spender I
am!) at the "upscale" places.

Cheers,

Ms. Melissa, the not-so-young, but still plenty cheap!

This always brings a wry smile to my face, when people call the lower
end properties in town "Dumps". Funny, but put just about any of these
properties in another city (say Detroit or Columbus or Kansas City) and
it would probably rank in the top 10 (well, in the case of the GS or WH,
maybe the top 20).

Of the few on the list above, the Cal is arguably the best and a great
bargain it is. I'd have no qualms staying at any of them, but would
avoid Excalibur (too many kids) and the Frontier (declining at an
alarming rate).

I wish I could remember the name of the place my brother in law stayed
in a couple weeks ago. He was in Vegas on business and was at TI for
three nights. Then the rates quintupled (went up 5X.. I like to make
up words) so he moved to the something something (country something?)
Budget Inn.

He had to switch to a new room the first night because his phone
didn't work and he had to dial into work. The manager seemed
concerned about moving him and asked "Are you quiet?" He explained
that section of the hotel had a lot of older people in it so he had to
be quiet. Well, those "older people" could sure get down!

About 9pm it started... the high heels clicking down the walkway.. the
door opening.. the negotiation of cash payment heard through the
connecting door.. ooh.. uh.. oh.. uh.. oooh.. thank you very much..
click click of heels heading back out onto the street. Repeat every
30 minutes.

He said they had interesting TV there too.

I told him he should have called me and I could have gotten him into
the GS with my Lucky Ned connections! :)

It wasn't all that long ago that the north end of the strip was considered to
be a great place. The question in my mind, then: Have these properties really
declined or has the south end really just passed the north? No question that we
all enjoy the new mega casinos on the south end. What about the north end
properties?
Stratosphere- certainly better than Vegas World was. Mr (Dr.) Matt may argue,
but who believes a guy carrying around beef tongues?
Sahara- much better than it was before Bennett purchased it.
El Rancho- I personally feel that it is better now than when it was open!
Seriously, this eyesore gives the north end a black eye. May be the
worst problem on the north that needs rectified.
Circus Circus- Really not that much different than it was 10 years ago. Still
attracts the same clientele. Rooms are cheap and adequate. Casino
crowded and in need of upgrade. Just like 10 years ago.
Riviera- this property has been through a lot. Bankrupcy, poor management,
expansion, etc. Bottom line-the quality has declined and the property is not
as good as in the past.
Stardust- A lot of people have been down on the Stardust recently. I think it
is better than ever. More tower rooms, good gaming, good
restaurants(excluding buffet) all add up to a good value in my book.
Westward Ho- if you have been in a 20 year time warp and put in the Ho, you
wouldn't know a day has passed.
Frontier- as Chuck mentioned, in serious decline. Two things that brought
people here were good inexpensive food and good gambling. Ruffin has taken
away both. An owner with deeper pockets could bring this property back
quickly.
Desert Inn- Though the complete overhaul of the entire resort changed the look
of the place, it was deserted 10 years ago, and it is deserted now. A posh
joint, but too quiet and boring. Overall, nicer now due to the remodeling.
Slots-O-Fun, Silver City, and all the rest- Time warp material
So, in my long winded way, I defend my feelings of the north end. It is better
overall than it has ever been, but we have been spoiled by the South Strip.
Please , however, do not call it a DUMP!

Respectfully,

Tim Altman---

We need to be careful not to take advantage of Lucky Ned for a couple of
reasons. First is that because of his systems and the conditions under
which he plays them (sober to drunk) he is not always the most welcome
person at the Spike. Second is that we don't want him to feel we are
taking advantage of him, not because he's a great guy, but because he has
a temper and I always get the brunt of Ned's abuse.

I think Stinky will be posting our Vegas trip report next week, and there
is a section of it where he talks about our night spent with Lucky Ned.
Also, Lucky Ned has agreed to write an exclusive "A Day in the Life of
Lucky Ned" article for the exclusive Big Empire Buddies newsletter
(http://www.BigEmpire.com/buddy.html), which will be sent out next
Thursday.
