Close, but I believe it's your Avast! and not your Agent.

I believe you have to adjust your Avast! settings.
Something like
Avast UI » Real-time Scanners » Mail Shield » Expert Settings » SSL Accounts
and turn off SSL for your Giganews account.

[I don't have Avast! here so I can't confirm the exact settings.]


Explanation
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Avast!'s real-time scanner cannot scan SSL connections. So Avast!
prompts SSL users to turn off SSL. Avast! then scans the connection,
automatically detects that the server supports SSL, and forwards the
connection to the server over an SSL connection.

What I think has happened here is that Avast! has automatically
detected that your server Giganews supports SSL. Avast! has decided
that you are an SSL user who has followed the Avast! prompt to turn
off SSL so Avast! can scan the connection and keep you safe.
Avast does not know that your account does not include SSL.
You need tom tell Avast! that you are not an SSL user.
