Does anybody happen to know of a keyboard shortcut (or menu item) to
navigate to the "parent" post. That is, the item being replied to, the
previous item in the thread.

Essentially, I'm talking about the behavior you get if you double-click
on the last item in the References: header (assuming you have your mime
settings to have Agent handle these items.)

The keyboard shortcut U (shortcut for menu item Navigate/Up...) works,
*if* the referenced item is visible in the view. If the referenced item
is not, I have to either use my mouse (something I generally try to
avoid) or change views so that the referenced item is shown...

This is clearly not a big deal, but I was just wondering if somebody
knew some handy keyboard shortcut to jump to the replied to post...

Thanks, but I'm looking for something that works when the post in
question isn't visible in the view at the moment...

Okay, obviously I didn't explain clearly enough what I was looking for,
so let me try again... Perhaps some examples will help...

Often I want to navigate to the "parent" of the post I am looking at,
that is, the post to which the current post is replying...

Now, usually, I am in a threaded view, one with the option to show
entire threads, so pressing U takes me right to the parent of course.

But, this only works if the parent post is directly above the current
post, which allows U (which really means Up, not Parent) to navigate to
the parent.

There are several cases in which the parent post is not directly above
the current post, in which case U will of course NOT navigate to the
parent.

... if I am not in a threaded sort. I might have it temporarily sorted
by date or or author. Of course in this case I can switch to a threaded
sort to find the parent post...

...if I am in a view that isn't showing entire threads. I have some
views that where I purpose didn't check show entire thread. Of course
in this case, I can switch to a view that does show entire threads to
find the parent post...

...if the current post is no longer in the selection criteria for a
view. For example, I often use a view that shows unread posts, with
their entire threads. So, say I read a post, it's now marked unread,
and I have already navigated to the next group... But I think of
something and decide to go back to the post, so push alt-leftarrow or
backspace to go back. Forte is nice enough to conveniently show me that
post I just left even though it wouldn't normally be visible now
(because I'm viewing unread posts, and this one is now read). Now I
want to look at its parent, which isn't visible. Of course in this
case, I could get the whole thread visible again by marking the item
unread again (X key) and refreshing the view (F5 key)...

Now, in *all* of these cases, although U won't work to get to the parent
post, there is a fairly easy way to get to the parent post (easier than
the workarounds I mentioned for each case): Double click on the last
item in the references line. But that requires the mouse, so I was just
wondering if there might be some keyboard shortcut to do the equivalent,
jump to the parent post whether or not it is directly above the current
post and even if it isn't even visible. Okay, there is a keyboard
method, use the arrow keys to get to the last item in references, then
shift-F10, J... but although keyboard only, it hardly seems like a
shortcut when you have to navigate to that last item in references...

Admittedly, this is a bit obscure, and certainly no real hardship, but I
just have this habit of asking if there might be keyboard shortcut for
*anything* I find myself using the mouse for... :-)

AFAICT there isn't one.

... although you may have to press "U" multiple times, if there is another
sub-thread between the selected message and its "parent".

E.g. these messages are visible in the message list pane, with Frank's post
selected:

Anna's post
Bill's post
Charlene's post
David's post
Emma's post
Frank's post <--- with Frank's post selected

You need to press "U" four times to go to the parent post of Frank's post,
which is Bill's post.

Pressing "U" multiple times still works, when the "parent" is out of view because
it is off the top of the pane. (You just have to know when to stop pressing "U").

If the "parent" is hidden by your viewfilter, that is another matter.
