(1) Will my 1.93 work under Win 7 64 bit?
(2) I really, really like the text editor in 1.93. I really, really dislike
text editors with formatting. Does the current version have an option to
use a simple text-only editor?
(3) The crossposting is really lame in 1.93. I have accepted it, though
right now it is screwing me up. I put a watch on a thread not realizing it
was also crossposted to a newsgroup higher up in the newsgroup list. I read
a bunch of posts. Then I read some more. Then I realized that I was only
reading the handful that had the crosspost stripped out. So now I have a
thread with 150 downloaded articles all marked as having been read, expect
I've only read a couple dozen. Has this been fixed?

Yes, To avoid any issues install or copy the Agent folder with directory
to the MY Documents or documents folder
c:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\My Documents\Agent
Set the agent.exe file in Properties to be compatible with Windows 2000.
c:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\My Documents\Agent\agent.exe
in Windows Explorer right-click
Select Properties
Press Compatibility Tab
Run this program in Compatibility mode for
Windows 2000
If you copy the Agent folder from another computer right-click agent.exe
in windows explorer and select Send To -> Desktop (Create Shortcut). If
you want to add it to the Start Menu or task bar you can right click and
pin agent.exe to menu or task bar when Agent is running.
Tip: Use Winzip or 7-zip or RAR to preserve file permissions and data
between computers. If you use read/write media often the file is changed
to read only making the file unusable until you go into the Agent data
folder and change the properties of each IDX and DAT file.

No, it uses the editor provided by Agent.

I have never used this feature in Agent. With TB HD's and Broadband ISP
saving bandwidth and disk space is not my top priority.

Yes, provided you do one of these
A. Install Agent outside both the "Program Files (x86)" and "Program Files"
folders.
or
B. You can install Agent inside the Windows "Program Files (x86)" folder,
but you must put your Agent Data folder outside both the Windows
"Program Files (x86)" and "Program Files" folders.
1. Install Agent 1.93 on Win 7.
2. Move or create the Data sub-folder somewhere outside the
"Program Files(86)" and "Program Files" folders.
3. Make sure there is an "AGENT.INI" file in the
Data folder (at its new location).
4. On the shortcut that you use to start Agent,
go to the shortcut properties and set the "Start In"
to the new location of the Data folder.
Regarding steps 1-4 above, go to the Agent 1.93 help file at
"Help Index Multi-user configuration" and read the part for
"Windows 95 or NT4". Vista and Win 7 also require the data folder to
be located outside Program Files.

The text editor has hardly changed at all.

Crosspost management has changed, starting with Agent 4.0.
Starting from 4.0, it does not matter which group you download headers in first.
(a) You can specify a priority order for groups, and crosspost detection
will kill the crosspost in all but your highest priority group which
the message is cross-posted to. Even if you only download headers
later in the priority group.
(b) You can also totally kill any message cross-posted to more
than <number> groups, where you can choose the <number>.

Thanks, but that tells me nothing at all. How easy is it to get rid of
formatting? What do I have to do to paste in formatted text from a web page
that I don't want formatted?

I don't understand this answer. What does saving space and a fast
connection have to do with the way Agent makes an article as read when it
hasn't been read, just that it also appears in a group above in the list?
I don't see how this would help me. When I read a thread I do not see the
headers. I have no idea whether it has been crossposted to another group I
have above or below it in my subscribed list. I don't consider any group to
have a higher priority than another. If I check the header before every
time I watch a thread, and finding it has been crossposted, I could then
not watch it there but instead go watch it in the higher group. And then
most threads I watch are set automatically with filters.
>(b) You can also totally kill any message cross-posted to more

A useless feature.
So far it looks like there is no reason to upgrade from 1.93.

You have only told us your negatives wants, not your positive wants.
You told us what you didn't want (that the messages were marked read
in the group which you were reading) and then you asked "has this been
fixed". You didn't say what alternative (out of many) you do want.
So what do you want?
A. Did you want the 150 or so messages to not be marked read in either
group?
This you can do already in 1.93. Problem solved.
B. Did you still want the 150 or so messages to be marked read in one
of the two groups, and not marked read in the other group?
If that is what you want, then tell us how Agent is to select which
group you want each messages to be marked read in, and which group
not marked read. Neither of your posts have told us this.
All you have told us is you what you don't want for alternatives.
C. Did you want another of the infinite alternatives?

It is a feature that was requested many times.
Do you have any positives to say?

Suit yourself. Nobody here makes money out of you upgrading.

I just installed it in the usual way (as with XP) and agent was
installed in the C:\Program Files\Agent.
Without opening Agent I opened the properties of the link to agent and
in the Start in: box I typed D:\data
Now Agent starts with all my data.
I found absolutely no problem. In fact most of the programs I have
been using with XP work under Windows 7.

In this case the watch was set by me. It downloaded only the bodies on the
thread that I set the watch. That was good. But all were marked as read,
when clearly I had not read them. They should not have been marked as read
until I read them.

Crosspost checking marks crossposted messages read in a group before
you have read them. Turn off crosspost checking, and this won't happen.

But your response here isn't consistent with my other response on this.

I just upgraded from 1.93 to 6. Since I'm still using WinXP Pro SP3,
I can't speak to this one.

I don't see much change in the text editor.

I don't cross post much, so I can not speak to this issue. However I
you may want to see my reply per Message-ID:

Beside most of the shortcut keys I used in V1.93 still work. V6 has
finally made me contribute to the developers coffee fund. :)

Look at the release notes:
http://forteinc.com/release/index.php
Read over the features introduced with the versions since 1.93,
and evaluate how useful those features would be to you.
(It's not like updating an operating system; for example there are lots
of reasons to use Win XP instead of Win 3.1 that might not be obvious
from a "list of features". But with Agent, the new features in the
release list are a pretty good indicator of the extent to which an
upgrade would be beneficial to you...)
If you see some intriguing features and decide to upgrade, always take a
backup of your data before upgrading in case you want to go back...
If I upgraded and then decided I didn't prefer the new features,
wouldn't I lose the posts and e-mails I had downloaded to the new
version?
I do have several instances that I use for different purposes so I
guess I could duplicate one and try it?
Good point. You could always download the new usenet stuff again, but
to be able to download the email stuff again you would have to make sure
that it is left on the mail server....
>>If I upgraded and then decided I didn't prefer the new features,
Or export and import them, locally.

You can export/reimport Usenet posts too!
... you just wouldn't often need to.

Multiple accounts was introduced in Agent v3 for newsgroups only, it
didn't work for email until v3.2. I found multiple accounts to be one
of the most useful improvements to Agent (for TEXT NEWSGROUPS).

You could always export them from the new version to a Unix message file,
and then import them from the Unix message file back into the old version.
