As the subject says, is it possible to sync the database of 2 Agent
installs on 2 different computers using this program? What folders do
I need to use? Thanks for any help you can give!

I haven't used GoodSync.

But I should warn you,

1. Don't ever sync the database while Agent is open.
Agent does not share its database files gracefully,
not even with sync programs.

2. I would suggest that you do nott run Agent on each computer
and then try to sync them. You will get data being transferred
in both directions, and eventually this can cause problems.
Between syncs, run Agent on only one of the two computers.
That way, the sync will only transfer data in one direction.

In Agent,
1. Select any folder in the folders pane
2. Go to "Folder Properties Name and Scheme"
3. Look at the bottom of the panel.

That will tell you the two files for this folder's database.
You need to sync all the files in the same folder.

Isn't this really an argument for IMAP?

Just the data directory.

However beware that it's going to copy everything every time.

My experience is that most Agent users asking about syncing databases
are wanting this for reading Usenet messages.

It is possible to implement an IMAP interface to an NNTP news server.
However, these users also want to keep their "read", "saved", etc.,
flags in sync. They won't get this automatically, because the NNTP news
server does not store this information for users.

Thanks. I was actually thinking of having a database central area
where I would sync each version to trying to avoid some of what you
warn about.

There isn't a central folder that contains all the data for my emails
and addresses? I didn't think I'd need to go to each folder to find
what I need to sync.

Thanks again for your rely.

Thanks for the reply. Which folder is that one? With syncing only the
changed files will be copied though.

Do not run Agent at two different computers and then sync them
with the database central area. If you do, eventually this will
cause problems.

Between syncs with the central database, run Agent on only one of
the computers.

There is a central repository. It is then folder containing those two files.
If you pick any other message folder in Agent, its two files will be in the
same folder. The files which you need to sync are all the files in the
same folder.

If you want your "review recent emails" to be kept in sync, you also
need to sync subfolders of this folder.

I understand your concerns but only running Agent on one computer
would negate the reason for having it on two. I plan on syncing to the
"central database" before and after each computer session where Agent
will be used. This should avoid any issues as far as I can see. Is
there something I'm obviously missing?

I've been using the above return address for almost 23 years now,
probably before there actually ever was a real "@ here.com" domain.
Never thought about it since I first used it. Changing it is no big
deal. Thanks for bringing it to my attention that I could
inadvertently be bringing spam to someone.

It's the directory specified in the shortcut.

I'm aware it only copies the changed stuff--the point is that's
generally everything. The only files that won't get copied are if
there were no new messages in a group.

Huh? I haven't said to only ever run Agent on one computer.

The important part is to do all the right syncs between using
Agent on one computer and using Agent on another.

That should be OK, so long as between the "before" and "after"
syncs you run Agent on only that one computer. Once you have done
the "after" sync, you can then go to a second computer, sync before
running Agent, and sync after.

We're on the same page and I will be doing as you advise. Thanks again

And where is that USB stick? It's probably at some other location.

The above describes what makes that method unsuitable.

I realise this is an old thread BUT with the advent of affordable and
in many cases "free" online storage sites is it possible to get Agent
to use the datafie on a remote site.

Thereby using the one data file when using any computer you have
synced to the online storage

The trick is to wait for it to sync-up before closing Agent. If Agent
closes unexpectedly, you'll have unpredictable results next time it
opens.

It usually just brings you "back" and you have to download messages that
have already been read.

One problem is the custom dictionary. There is a quirk I can't quite
pin down yet. I have lost the custom dictionary completely before.

I'd have thought the trick would be to wait for it to sync up *after*
closing Agent... the files are guaranteed to be in the finished+closed
state then.

On the other machine(s), you then have to wait until the Agent files
are synched fully locally before starting it up.
