I'm running Agent 1.93/32.576 and have been having no major problems
doing so on my desktop for years. My desktop runs Windows 2000.

Recently I bought a new Thinkpad T60, preloaded with Windows XP
Professional SP2. For a while I only downloaded my email to my desktop
and would access it on my ISP's server with my laptop, which connects to
my wireless network. I don't yet have things set up for my laptop to
access my desktop and besides that I don't keep my desktop on most of
the time. So, I want to be able to do my email stuff with my laptop even
when my desktop is off. The last day, I decided to load all my Agent
files to my laptop and configure Agent on the laptop to leave emails on
the server. I figure I'll download and erase them when I download to my
desktop. That way I will have all my emails in one place (desktop), and
still be able to download emails to my laptop, launch URL's from my
laptop's Agent, do newsgroup stuff, etc. with my laptop.

I set up Mailwasher Free on my laptop just like I did on my desktop, and
copied the Mailwasher files over (Blacklist, Friends list, filters).
Mailwasher seems to be acting OK.

The first time I downloaded emails to the laptop's Agent things acted
fine (AFAIK). Next time I tried to do so I got an error:

Error reported by server: -ERR invalid user/password. : Logging into pop
server.

I get this error now every time I try to download my email.

When I tried to go into Agent's options ( Options/User and System
Profile ), the screen would open for a 1/2 second and immediately close.
When I chose Options/Inbound Email, the screen would open right to the
Kill tab and the Expression dropdown for "Initial settings for new kill
filters" would display my pop server!!! In the dropdown it would say
pop.pacbell.yahoo.com !!!! It would do this even though the dropdown
is populated only by the following:

Any-Sender
Apparently-From
Apparently-To
Bcc
cc
Date
From
etc.

Agent in a flash displays a message concerning this:

"The match field name may not be blank, and may contain only letters,
numbers, - and _."

I stopped that from happening by substituting one of the items in the
dropdown list (e.g. Any-Sender).

On top of that, "pop." appears in the editing window labeled "Priority."
Appropriate for this field is blank or 600, or 400, etc.

I erased that ("pop."). I had to go into the Watch tab and undo the same
crazy things to stop the error message in quotes above.

Another strange thing is that instead of the usual content in my Agent's
title bar when run on the desktop (Agent - [the name of the open folder
or the subject of the message being written]), what's appearing is my
newsgroup server instead of "Agent". For example:

news.sf.sbcglobal.net [Inbox]

On my desktop it says:

Agent - [Inbox]

Another crazy thing: On the System tab of Options/Inbound Email, the
field labeled "Username: " is populated with my pop server,
pop.pacbell.yahoo.com !! I change that to my actual username at my ISP,
save in Agent (click OK), and when I go back into the same screen it
again says pop.pacbell.yahoo.com for username! It also has the other
crazy stuff all back again on the Kill and Watch tabs! I don't know why
Agent keeps getting the wrong data in there. Is it being stored in some
Agent file? I don't believe Agent keeps any information in the registry.

Does anyone have a clue what is wrong here? I'm at my wits end,
basically. I copied over Agent again and the same things happened. Any
help very much appreciated!

Clearly the title is getting munged in the \agent\data\agent.ini file at
the line:

Title="Agent "

Now, if I copy over my old agent.ini file from my desktop and open
Agent, it again displays "Agent" in the title bar. But the second I
access Options/User and System Profile, the screeen flashes open and
closes in 1/4 second and it again has my newsgroup server in the title
bar:

news.sf.sbcglobal.net

Now please correct me if I'm wrong but I've always thought that to move
your Agent from one system to another all you have to do is copy the
Agent tree right over to the other system. Am I wrong there? I've been
using Agent for seems like 10-12 years, first Agent Free, eventually
1.93. Thanks for any help.

No, you are quite right that is all you normally need to do.

It was the case with 1.93, and is still the case with 4.x. I did
almost that last week when I bought a new computer (both old and new
being XP Home), and it worked perfectly.

And when I have to go away from home, I always copy all the data files
to my laptop and use that while away.

This sounds like something is corrupted, but I would have expected the
second attempt at copying to have fixed that, unless it is one of the
windows system files that Agent probably uses for dialogs.

Have you tried a fresh install of Agent on the laptop, then just copy
over the data directory (And sub-directories)?

Thanks. I was wondering if I could do that - i.e. fresh install and copy
over the data. That's my next try at it. Honestly, I spent at least a
couple of very vexing hours yesterday wrestling with this. It seems very
very odd. Maybe I'll try copying Agent again. I used a flash USB drive,
new, that I just bought - a 2 GB device. Could be it's faulty, I
suppose. I have a 1 GB flash drive I could use instead. I believe my
Agent tree is a bit over 1 GB, but I could do it in two passes. Will
try recopying today before trying the fresh install approach. The recopy
I did yesterday did not involve a fresh copy from my desktop.

What I've done is copied back the Agent tree from my flash drive to my
desktop. It runs fine there. Therefore I have to conclude that it's
something to do with my laptop (T60) that's causing the problem A
corrupted Windows system file? I can't imagine that, but maybe it's
true.

My agent tree is also a bit over 1GB but Winzip brings it down to ~450MB.
My backup flash drive has two copies which alternate daily.
