Bob Cunningham, happy birthday
on your 90th anniversary on March 23.
I trust you are well, little, if at all, inferior
to anyone in wellfare.

Wishing you all the best,
CK

I hope it does not mean anything bad, but my wishes that I sent to Bob's
e-mail address (which was still good in January of 2010) got returned as
undeliverable.

Same here - I last communicated with him in September 2010, at which
time he said "I've left my home for a retirement "village"".

That's sad. The only people who I think would find life pleasant in a
retirement village would be ex-members of the Stazi.

For many of us it's a necessary step in our struggle for survival.

That reminds me a New Yorker cartoon about man's evolution: it started
with a semi-monkey, very closed to the ground, then the creature
gradually became more erect until homo sapiens, at the peak of his
evolution, goes through the metal detector machine.

Happy Birthday Sparky, whereever you are.

I'm not too worried. We heard from him only a few months ago. He's lost
his e-mail address, it seems, but not necessarily anything else.

On the other hand, I have to say that my own father was in fine fettle
at his 90th birthday celebration. Five months later he was gone.

I suspect I would not be averse if I need to move to such a place in my
90s. But preserve me from having to live in close contact with people
who I would have avoided in earlier years.

Make out a Living Will now while you have your marbles.

But if I won't have my marbles, would I really care if I were
surrounded only by people who start their sentences with "basically"?

It depends on whether you want to leave your estate
to your kids, wife etc., or let the Medicos fritter it away
on expensive life-prolonging treatments.

Yes. The marbles might have gone, but that sort of stuff remains.

I probably wouldn't mind, if I'd mislaid my marbles.

Mike Barnes <mikeb...@bluebottle.com>:
Bob replied (in part):

You have my permission to give my new e-mail address to anyone you
want to give it to, and to publicize any portion of this message.  (I
first wrote "or to publicize", but that seemed to imply a mutually
exclusive choice.)

I haven't been following AUE or any other Usenet groups in recent
years.  I sometimes get an urge to post when I see something
appropriate in the news, but with my present newsreader it would take
me a while to learn how to get Usenet, if Yahoo even provides it.

A recent excellent example was a long article on sentence diagramming
in the New York Times.  It would have been nice to have when we had
our AUE thread on sentence diagramming years ago.

Note that when I say "sentence diagramming", I don't mean the
diagramming that linguists do nowadays.  I mean the entirely
different diagramming that we did in grammar classes circa 1934.  The
NY Times article informs me that it's no longer done, but it laments
the loss.

I remain in reasonably good health, thank you.  I had my 90th
birthday a few days ago.  (My daughter used candles formed of ones
and zeroes to decorate a cake with the string "1011010".)

Bob's spirit is clearly faring well.

I've sent Bob's current e-mail address to David, Katy and Skitt, and
will do so to anyone else who asks. Note: if you haven't e-mailed me
before, you'll get an automatic response which requires you to verify
yourself using a web link before your message can be delivered to me.

address, but please when someone who does is getting in touch, pass on
my good wishes.
