Comcast is discontinuing newsgroup access in my area soon. Access has been
with Giganews and that service can be purchased directly for $8.00 a month.
Are there cheaper alternatives that anyone here uses? RY

Newsguy's "Basic" service is $7.95 a month and gives you access to binaries,
with a 10GB/month download limit...that also gets you access through the DRN
(Direct Read News) interface so you can keep up with your newsgroups from any
computer with a web browser (they won't let us put Outlook or anything else on
the ones at work)....r

As a Comcast subscriber, I just now established a free account with
news.motzarella.org. It works fine. I hope it will last a long time.

Several, as long as you don't want binaries. I think individual.net is
still the cheapest, at 10 euros per year. There are also several free
ones, but the trouble with free services is that you don't have much
leverage if they don't work properly.

After they were mentioned in this groups previously, I investigated
block accounts. Those can be useful if you want text and low to
moderate binary usage. Costs run from $1 - $.50 per gigabyte of
bandwidth, depending on the amount purchased at once. Unless you're
getting TV shows or the like from multimedia groups, a gig should last
most people a long time.

When Verizon cut back on newsgroups, including cutting all the alt
groups, I investigated alternatives and settled on individual.net as
being universally praised and not at all expensive. No binaries, if
that matters to you.

As did I, but I added a second (free) account with albasani.net as backup.

Those considering this option might like to bear in mind that a fair
number of people bin anything from Altopia, because of the amount of
spam and miscellaneous garbage they transmit. (This isn't because they
don't care; it's because they adhere to the tired old absolutist view
of "freedom of speech", and therefore don't filter anything).

Fair enough. Our policies are up at:

Some people like our approach to speech while others don't.
