Just heard on the BBC news:

For the first time in as many days there has been a bomb explosion in
Pakistan.

How many days is that?

It must be one day: "first time" = 1.

It's elliptical for:
Today there was a bomb explosion in Pakistan for the first time in as
many days as there hasn't been an explosion.

Interesting Google statistics:
"For the second time in as many days" gets 1,440,000 hits.
"For the first time in as many days" gets 4 hits.

Let's hope it doesn't get any more common than that.

words together as I was on 11/10/2009 in saying:

They must have misspoken. I noticed that same comment on Yahoo news,
but it was the third time.
