If the people at the BBC have any sense, they will capitalise upon the
popularity of the lizard Silurian character, Vastra, and her, ahem,
companion, Jenny Flint, by creating a spin-off series, at least in some
form, even if a television spin-off show is not feasible at this time. I am
sure that Steven Moffat knows that he has struck a chord with these two
characters, and that it would be a colossal waste to just relegate them to
mere guest characters, that just pop up every now and then, only for guest
appearances
They deserve six seasons, centred around them, before Vastra is killed
off, permanently.

step up and run the production. Consider what Russel T Davies did with
THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES and TORCHWOOD (and now his new show WIZARDS
VS ALIENS.) If Moffat were willing to write and run a new show based
around those two characters in addition to Doctor Who I'm sure the BBC
would give it a chance. However Moffat seems to like doing a number of
different types of shows so I don't know if he wants to spend the
entire year in the Doctor Who universe which would be the case if he
was running both shows.

Moffat is doing a twenty first century version of Sherlock Holmes. I think
that Victorian period pieces have always been the BBC's strongest point,
both visually and dramatically, from a production stand-point.

Ideally, Moffat would always write the season openers (his strong point),
and leave it to some-one else to follow through on the series arc and
finales (his weak point). I do not think that it necessarily matters, one
way or the other, whether Moffat were involved, as these two characters are
strong enough to justify and carry their own series regardless of who was
writing it.

One of things that really disappointed me about both the Sarah Jane
Adventures, and Torchwood, is that they turned the lead characters of both
of those shows into an inferior carbon copy of, or a proxy for, the Doctor.
Imagine the potential of series where the only sci-fi element in most of the
stories is that one, or two (if Strax is included), of the characters is not
a human. Imagine a series that is set in the Doctor Who universe, without
the regular occurrence of unbelievably crap alien invasions that are even
more unbelievably undone with the wave of a magic screwdriver ...

The character alluded to in the subject line has many similarities with
Xena. In fact, I would be surprised if she, and her companion, were not
directly influenced by or deliberately based, at least in part, on Xena and
Gabrielle. I thought that the people who read the Xena newsgroup might be
interested in this, since there is no more Xena, nor any lead characters
like her, that I am aware of, on television today.
