By the way, I got an email from Kim Masera Taborn. She has offered to let
us copy from her Whoosh! pages to save time. I couldn't believe she heard
about Swish! on the grapevine, much less that she would be helpful about
it. She must realize that flattery is the sincerest form of imitation.
I hope I will have time this weekend to work on the Swish! graphics.
Gail, could you email the Swish! content we have so far?
Stacey
I wouldn't be surprised. I'm saving it to read a bit later
when I can give it proper attention. I do mean that seriously.

That is cool!

The only thing I have is the recent contest entries, which I
will forward to you unedited[1]. May we discuss planning
for this "event"? For example, is there any reason why we
couldn't do some original "essays", not previously posted?
I like the idea Willie and I came up with independently of
arguing that Joxer is X:WP's central character. I think Willie
& I can "prove" it quite easily (especially by using the sloppy
standards of "proof" typical of fandom <g>). I would also
like to revise my contest entry to focus on Virginal Subtext
(and cut out Howdy Doody), which I think has some real
potential for satire, and would like to elicit comments and
contributions, especially from some of the ATX-SMers
who tend to think in fractal patterns while I'm still plugging
along following straight lines. :)
I also plan to review ATX-SM entries for the past six months
(at least) to try to find some other useful entries. But I'm
not going to be able to do that for another week or so. If
you plan to have Swish! up and running very soon, I'd
like to know so I don't spend time on something (reading
ATX-SM for the past year!) that has no purpose. Other
than masochism. <g>
But that's just in my little head, and if you have a different
view of how Swish! should look, maybe we can discuss it?

[1] I mean I haven't edited mine yet. I wouldn't touch anyone
else's.
Two things I'm thinking of.
One is to analyze some greek pottery in terms of Xena (I've been
reading the Journal of the Hellenic Society lately)
Second is to do a parody of Kafka's Die Verwandlung in terms of Xena
("One morning Xena Samsa woke up to find that he had been transformed
into a Lesbian/feminist icon")
As I've said, the Tolkien group has long had a tradition of parodies
and take off, and I think that even if we look in the main group we
may find some in the past.
For instance, the Gilbert and Sullivan parodies.

That sounds like fun.

Xena "he"??

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not sure why I would
want to go to a newsgroup that I'm not interested in, that
has no relation whatsoever to X:WP or X:WP fandom, to
get ideas when it seems to me there are plenty of weird
ideas floating around ATX-SM. JIMO. Where you get
your ideas from is up to you, of course.
The bit about ATX (I assume that's what you mean by
"the main group") I'm not clear on. I thought Swish! was
*our* project - the ATX-SM posters. Some (or all?) of
us also read ATX, but we wouldn't spend so much
time here (ATX-SM) if we didn't think ATX-SM was
qualitatively different from ATX. ATX is related, of
course, and I get ideas over there that I use here and vice
versa, but it wasn't my understanding that Stacey was
proposing to do a Whoosh! parody page representing the
ATX* family of newsgroups - just ATX-SM.
But maybe that's open for discussion, too. My preference
would be to keep it limited to ATX-SM for tons of
reasons I'd rather not go into[1].
Gail
[1] 'cause I'm taking a break from digging trenches (no,
REAL trenches! sheesh) and I need to get back out in the
hot sun so I can finish bye
Sorry, by main group I meant ATX.
And maybe I misunderstood, I thought that it was Xena parody not ATXSM
per se. I'm oke with either.
And yes, I meant "she"
Unprovoked flamer! <grin>

> And maybe I misunderstood, I thought that it was Xena parody not ATXSM

Xena parody, but ATX-SM _project_. Is what I thought.
> Unprovoked flamer! <grin>
That's what happens when a sweet thing like me spends so
much time on the main group. <g>
Gail
Gabrielle: "Not tonight."
I'm certainly fine with that. Personally, I don't intend to do that much
work in the way of revising old posts. I'd like my "subtext action
figures" ditty to go somewhere. But besides that, I'm more concerned with
the actual setting up of the site than specifically what's in it.

If you'd like to work together, that's awesome. If not, I see no reason
why we can't create two different entries.

I dunno. I thought the Howdy Doody bits were brilliant, save perhaps for
some of the more untenable character comparisons. I would really hate to
see that go altogether, though you might cull it into a seperate essay.

No. I will create some sample graphics and post here when the Swish! look
is complete. But as for the content, I don't feel we've really begun.
Stacey
Both sound good. I'm particularly keen on your second idea, though, is it
sounds like the sort of topic only you could do proper silly credit to.

This is something that needs some debate. I wouldn't mind reusing the
newspaper article from the London Times, as a sort of "dissent." I would
also love to the "Heroin Barbarian" song on the site. But when we balance
that against our desire to be purist, is it worth it?
I dunno. I'll think on it.
Stacey
I meant it to be our project, but more in the sense of ATX-SM members
creating the site than in the site being ATX-SM posts only. It could
really go either way, or really any way we want it to go. My point is
it's up to us, and I'm not sure what my opinion on the matter is.
Stacey

<snipping transparent flame-baiting>

Lulls in the airing of new episodes have predictable results on
newsgroups about television shows, including this one. Xena is in such a
state of flux that I sense most people here are hesitant to assess
general patterns about this season. Without a cliff-hangar to rally
around, it's hardly surprising that we've fallen to confused silence.
Also, most of the people engaged in this newsgroup have taken the unusual
tack (in usenet, anyway) of rarely offering up posts that don't tread
any new ground. Obviously, some of us are slower to catch on to this.
I may take my coordinating discussions with Gail to email, but I won't
hide away discourse that impacts at least half a dozen people here. It
may be difficult for you to understand this, but I value their opinions.
Stacey
Hey, what's with Aeth? He sounded positively grumpy! I would never
have expected it of him. Gosh.
He does have a point though, I would hate to have to wade through even
more off-topic posts here, the volume is just killing my download time
as it is.
And yes, I do remember I owe you a Lao Ma subtextopaedia entry.
Until you do make up your mind what your opinion is, this seems a good
point at which to suggest that you take planning "Our Project" to email.
Unless of course you need the world to see and admire every thought and
(lack of) opinion that anyone has in organising a parody website which only
needs filling in the spaces in the original graphics which Whoosh! has
generously given permission to use.
My understanding was that Swish! was ATX-SM's
subtexty (in the inclusive sense of subtext) parody of
Whoosh! Posters as well as content. That's an extreme
position, and I'm more than willing to go along with
whatever the group decides. However, I'm concerned if
we open it up too much, we'll get a lot more people
involved, and the nice little fun focussed summer project
will become the monster that ate Pittsburgh.
Perhaps we could include a challenge to other newsgroups
to do their own parody. For example, ATX's parody could
be called "Sizzle!", which would be the flame version of
Whoosh! <eg> Oh heck now I've started something:
AFROC's parody would of course have to be called
"Drool!Thud!" and would focus on ROC/Gabrielle. Xena
who? ATX-S - - never mind, better quit while I'm ahead. :)
Gail

Xena: "I'm in complete control of my mood swings."
Gabrielle: "Not tonight, 'cause *I'm* in control."
Thanks for that clarification. It helps.

I'm easy either way. I'll email Willie and see what he thinks.

LOL! "Brilliant"? An act of desperation, you mean, due to
your bizarro contest "rules". I just thought of the earliest
TV show I could remember watching, and my warped
brain took it from there.

*Which* untenable character comparisons? Humpf! You
might not realize it but a lot of those character comparisons
weren't meant seriously. <g>
I would really hate to

That's exactly what I was thinking, a sort of "X:WP Source"
essay.

Oh goodie! Just let me know if I'm dragging my feet too much.
I'm pretty good about being given deadlines. :)

Oh dear me. Did I actually post that? So sorry: I meant to delete it,
but I was online instead of dealing with the alt.tv.xena* newsgroups
off-line as usual.
I do so look forward to seeing your new website though. When do you
think you all might manage to get it up and running?
Well, personally, I consider it a "comfortable" silence. If
we have something to say, we say it. If we don't, we don't.
There really isn't a lot of off topic stuff posted to ATX-SM.

Fan activities in a fan newsgroup happen to be *on* topic.
If you - Aethelrede or anyone else - don't like it, don't read
the posts. Discussing Swish!, which is an ATX-SM project,
in clear air, is a way of keeping everyone informed, and
eliciting comments. If Stacey hadn't posted her uncertainties
about the project, I would have continued to assume she had
a firm plan in mind. Perhaps other ATX-SMers made the
same assumption. She could have addressed my
assumptions by email, and then she could have told
everyone else the same thing - by email. What a waste of
time for Stacey and meantime planning which should
involve everyone is going on "offstage".
Stacey's contests might be considered "off topic" by some.
I consider them a great way to deal with XWS. If you
don't experience XWS, you obviously don't know what I'm
talking about. And once in awhile contest entries end up
having something interesting to say about episodes or
fandom that might otherwise not have been said.
I intend to keep discussing the ATX-SM project known as
Swish! in public, and I intend to continue joking around
with friends on ATX-SM and enjoying creative outlets
such as Stacey's contests. Don't read posts that you
consider "off topic" if they bother you so much.

If you find so little fulfilling here, perhaps you should leave?
Can't you go?
Must you stay?
