This week's contest is for "Most Absurd." This is directly related to our
newsgroup's penchant for Absurdly Deep Analysis (ADA) of the show.
Your post may be about any subject at all, or no subject. It's your
choice. To qualify, your post must contain:
* One specific element of Xena dissent. Examples: Rant against
Gabrielle's character inconsistency, abuse by one protagonist against
another, or the lack of subtext in a plot arc. Bonus points if your
dissent has never been voiced here before, and even more bonus points if
you are so convincing that other people get pissed off too.
* A quotation from a famous Greek writer, scholar, or philosopher. Some
examples include Sappho, Heroditus, Sophocles, Socrates, Pluto, Euclid,
Euripides, Hipocrates, etc. The more obscure the figure the better.
Please note that imaginary Greek figures (including the actual Greek
gods) don't satisfy this contest's rules.
* A possible explanation for one of the show's infamous abuses of
historical and scientific facts. Examples: Find historical justification
for a YAXI (yet another Xenaverse inconsistency), explain how Xena could
indeed have invented the kite or the Hipocratic philosophy, devise an
internally consistent physics model for Xena's chakram, etc.
* Convincing dialogue from one or more of the show's characters that they
never actually said. Bonus if the dialogue is funny and extremely in-
character, and even more bonus points if you are so convincing that at
least one person can't distinguish your inserted piece of dialogue from
the real thing. You may also substitute a supposed real-life quote from
one of the show's Powers That Be (actors, writers, directors, producers).
* A comparison between at least one of the show's regular characters and
the character(s) from a show that first aired before 1980. The more
ridiculous your comparison, the more impressive this exercise will be.
Bonus points if you are able to extrapolite the whole cast of the
comparison show into equivalent Xena characters.
Good luck, and may the Farce be with you.

Entries must be received by the end of Sunday night.

Since the contest requires a certain modicum of creative endeavor, may I
suggest Oh sublime Genetrix, that more time be allowed?
That's true. I'll concur.
I'm extending the deadline a week. So entries are due not this Sunday,
but the one after. Again, by midnight.

Damn, this contest sounds like hard work... Not sure if I'm qualified to
satisfy the rules... I'll see what I can do though... 8^)

An Extrapo 'Lite:
Mr Howell pops Gilligan a good one and G files across the room
to end up at the Skipper's feet.
Skip: "Get up, little buddy, and act like a god, you worm."
Ginger: "Hit 'im again, he deserves it. Little bastard
marooned us here."
Skip: "Ah, Ginge. Looking better than ever."
Gilligan: "Ginger? Next to her, Marianne is chopped liver."
Ginger: "Shut up, shipmate."
Marianne: "Fear is the cure for spirit. Break his legs."
Luvee: "You and me, right, How?"
Mr Howell: "You and me?"
Which I s'pose leaves Gabrielle and Joxer off playing with
coconuts. Quis est homo qui non fleret Matri Christi si
videret in tanto supplicio? Virgo virginum praeclara mihi
iam non sis amara fac me tecum plangere.
Just a three act play.
I do this the easy way. Use your own time zone. I can figure out which
one you are in. I've never had a problem with late entries before, and
this isn't exactly the Nobel Prize, so I'm pretty flexible.

Mmm, I just love to use acronyms... <g>
I *ought* to have written an entry, but real life and the serious absence of
the Muses have thwarted any attempts.

I intended to quote Heracleitus, of course, and maybe Sapho and Zeno of
Antioch. (he was the one who first suggested non-Euclidian geometry -- not to
be confused with Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoicism, or with Zeno of Elea,
the guy with the paradoxes and, obviously, an Eleatic --- Gail did a good job
with those, didn't she?)

Y'know the YAXI with Xena's chakram in `Chariots of War` --- she supposedly
doesn't have it, but then you see her with it?
Well, that was Gabrielle's THOUGHTs! She imagined Xena *would* have her
chakram, and so when Xena did NOT -- that *increased* the surprise! It was
(or should have been) INTENTIONAL!
Okay, enough.

> Thanks for this contest, Stacey.
Hey, no problem. It's been a lot of fun. I've started to type up a
general reply to all the entries. I'll probably stick the info about the
winner at the top and send it out tomorrow, when I'm sure all the entries
are in.

Wow. I knew that there were two Zenos, but I wasn't aware that there were
three. !!

Heh heh. That would have been fun to read. And in fact, it was. Don't
worry about not having enough time. I know all too well how life can
intrude on one.
