Discussion about these changes will take place over the next three weeks.
Please speak up if you would like to see other changes, if you don't like
the proposed changes, or if you would like the changes reworded.
Newsgroup members will vote on the changes from May 6 - May 13. After
May 13, the accepted changes will be incorporated into the FAQ. A 3/4
majority is needed to ratify the changes below.
***
This is an addition to our FAQ. The following would appear at the bottom
of the FAQ. It would appear in fine print on the HTML version of the FAQ.
* Posters to ATX-SM must exhibit at least one diarrhea of the mouth event
to be considered regular.
***
This is another proposed addition. The following would be listed in
between the Charter and the Rules section of the current FAQ.
Motto:
We are still confused, but at a higher level.
***
The following is a change to our FAQ. A sentence has been added to
explain the commonly used abbreviation ADA.
Q: What’s with all the abbreviations used on the newsgroup?
A: Folks discussing Xena tend to abbreviate almost any term which is
used often. This includes episode titles, commonly used phrases, and
the names of the Xena-related newsgroups. One common abbreviation used
only in this newsgroup is ADA, which stands for Absurdly Deep Analysis.
For a list of other commonly used abbreviations, read alt.tv.xena’s FAQ.
You can find it at http://www.bigfoot.com/~p.hilling/atx-faq.htm
***
The following appears in our FAQ, and I propose we remove it.
Q: Does Xena do porn?
A: Several people have asked the group this. Since pornography in the
modern sense didn’t exist in Xena’s time, she didn’t "do porn." Nor
does the modern-day actress who plays Xena, Lucy Lawless, do porn.
However, if you would like to imagine Xena doing porn, go right
ahead. That’s your prerogative.
Reason for removal: Nobody has asked this question in over a year,
therefore the information doesn't need to be in the FAQ.
***
This also appears in our FAQ, and I propose that we remove it.
Q: Is it just me, or is this FAQ file shorter than most of the other
ones I’ve read (especially newsgroups in the alt.tv.xena heirarchy)?
A: Yes. Aren’t you glad? :-)
Reason for removal: The FAQ for alt.tv.xena-subtext has been shortened,
and the joke doesn't make nearly as much sense now.
***
The FAQ includes some links to related sites. These are the proposed
changes related to those links.

Subtextopedia
-------------
listed as: this site is not currently listed

It covers several subjects that have been discussed here.

That concludes the proposed changes.

That was not a joke. Excellent choice. ::snicker::

The rest I'll vote on (as well as the above) at the appropriate
time. You'll remind us?
I can't think of any changes to suggest other than the ones
you've already listed.

I don't know, but I am not fond of the above. Sometimes what we do is
ADA but referring to it as "diarrhea of the mouth" is coarse and
belitteling it seems to me.

True. It was a thought. But the change can always be voted down.
And to answer Gail, yes I will remind everyone of when to vote.

Er, diarrhea, and regular?!? :)

No problems here.

One small point: the FAQ needs to be in standard ASCII. The quoted
paragraph contains several examples of curly apostrophes, which don't
travel well over the net.
Well, we could be genteel and call it logorrhea, which is, of course,
diarrhea of words.
I won't go into the meaning of amenorrhea, dysmenprrhea, leukorrhea,
pyorrhea, seborrhea or steatorrhea.
You've all heard about gonorrhea, I dare say.
Galactorrhea, though, is a problem that Lucy may be having, what with breast
feeding Julius. It's to milk what logorrhea is to words...
BTW, gonorrhea refers in the same way to excessive loss of semen. Ewwww,,,,,
ick...
The word "Diarrhea", though, was coined by Hippocrates himself, and HE
appeared on Xena.

Do we really need a "regular" status for ATX-SM? Not that I consider
myself a regular to ATX-SM, so I don't mind that I don't qualify. But
IMHO it rather sounds like the "Clique" that *someone* (not naming any
names here, but I think most of us know who I am talking about) has
invented over at ATX.

I like that. :-))

Exactly my thoughts. I'm mostly lurking around here. And what are the
perks of the regular status? First shots at newbies? ;)

Well, what about a paragraph like "No trespassing for [Godwin] here!"?
:) Not that HE would mind, but... :-) Ta!

Although the "higher level" sounds a bit assumptous, heh?
Firechild.
I concur with that modification. I originally used the
word "diarrhea" (despite having approximately the same
reaction Doug does) because one of my cats has been
having that problem for about four months[1], so the word
was salient to me. Also it was the absurd contest time
and I was primed for absurdity. Another thing I like
about logorrhea is that most people probably aren't
familiar with it, so it is delightfully obscure and will send
people (me!) off to their dictionaries, always a useful
side-benefit of reading ATX-SM.

Is that why she's looking so thin? Actually I think she looks
great. I don't know when late night shows are actually
filmed (late night? early morning? middle of the day?) but
she didn't look like she was about to fall asleep during her
appearances.

Those ancient Greeks were fascinated by bodily fluids,
weren't they? "Them Bones Them Bones" probably would
have been their fav S5 ep to date. <eg>

[1] I think I have finally found a brand of food that is
working for her, or at least the diarrhea isn't as bad or
frequent. And she's an adult - 15 years old - not a kitten.

I wasn't aware of the problem. But now that you mention it, I will go
ahead and format out the curly apostrophes for the next version.
Stacey

I agree. It's a clear improvement that doesn't change the meaning of the
original. However, I absolutely refuse to discuss the other -rrheas.
Ick. :-)

A little virtual Rocky Horror traditiona, anyone?
Heh.
This is a very good point to make, though. It's quite possible that we're
elitist enough over here without codifying it into the FAQ.
Stacey
Oh, I dunno, now that Cleanthes has cleaned up the language
a bit, I think it's a great pun. After all, even a newbie can
post one long, drawn-out post and be considered "regular"
first thing!
And we're not "elitist"; we're merely confused at a higher
level (not to use the new ATX-SM motto or anything...[1]).
Gail
[1] Even if it's not officially voted in, I suspect it's here
to stay.
I am concerned that regular lurkers such as myself (who, while silent for the
most part, read a.t.x-sm religiously) may feel excluded from newsgroup
membership by the above requirement, due to shyness or congenital inability to
produce a properly impressive diarrhea of the mouth event (or, in some cases, a
congenital inability to come up with an interesting subject to ramble on about
until after those of better wit and/or quicker pen have already thouroughly
explored said subject).
Can the definition of membership be amended to include a subclause stating that
lurkers may be excluded from the diarrhea requirement provided they
periodically remind the diarrheal regulars of their presence?
<g>
--Sekhmet
LOL! Hey, Sekhmet, you want to take on the fun chore of
writing a parody of the ATXSM FAQ for Swish! ? I think
you've demonstrated a certain amount of talent in that area. :)

Xena: "I'm in complete control of my mood swings."
Gabrielle: "Not tonight, 'cause *I'm* in control."
Well, I can't quite equal Cleanthes' sublime mastery of obfuscatory vocabulary
(who could dare compete? <g>), but I'm pretty good with unnecessarily complex
sentence structure, so why not?
::whispering:: but you need to sneak me a copy of the _real_ FAQ to work from;
I don't think I have a copy and can't remember the URL.
--Sekhmet (honored to be suggested for such an important assignment <g>)
Oh, goody, I'm so pleased you're willing to do this!
Many thanks. I'll send you a copy of the FAQ. It's quite short.
