This does sound plausible....at least about finding out about the ring.
But still unsettling. However - it would mean they *had* inserted the
damn ring on purpose in both flashback eps this season and that the ring
might be one reason for putting in those flashbacks (as well as filling
out other backstory).
Have we heard of any female roles in the movie that might be her?

The ring was definately not a mistake, It got so much
screen time it should have been listed as a guest star!
I think the the EX is still alive...she probably left him...
he's probably bitter and thats why he never told Scully
about it. My question is will this be revealed in the movie
or do you think they will save it for next season?

I doubt that. I found it interesting that a 1013 writer has been telling folks
that both the smoking and the ring were Duchovny's idea.

Frankly, I'm surprised they let him dictate that foolishness unless CC was
still sucking up to try and convince him to stay in Vancouver at the time.

My guess is we will never hear about it again. Unless the writing staff freaks
out about the reaction to it and feels now compelled to explain.

The infamous "shift the blame" technique ... gotta love it ;)

I'm not surprised, I'm appalled. Somebody at the next Expo should tell
the writers to spend less time listening to David's inane ideas and more
time rewatching the old episodes.

I hope not.

The assumption is that if Scully's knows about the ex-wife then it
would have appeared in the show by now. But is this a foregone
conclusion, or is there a possibility that Scully does know??

I agree. For one of the first times ever, I'm hoping for *no* continuity
on this issue! (Eek! Help! The earth is opening up to swallow me!!! ;-)

To tell you the truth, I don't care one way or the other if the ring
is never mentioned again (I'd rather it not be so we can just wonder).
What annoys me is that they had to show it THREE times, in case we
were too stupid to catch it the first time (or not paying attention, I
guess). Never one for subtlety, this show...

I agree wholeheartedly that it will probably never be mentioned
again.. If anything this could've been a way to tweak some of the
X-Philes. ;-)

I think he wears the ring to test the old theory about women being more
attracted to married men.

Maybe while they were making the ep everyone saw that it was going to
be a loser and DD suggested the ' Ring ' ( have to capitalize it
now that it is legendary ) and the smoking to at least give the
nitpickers something to talk about and distract them from seeing
what a toss-off this show really was . It worked perfectly. I've
never seen this much fuss made over something this trivial . With
the unexpected continuation of the show for 2 more seasons, Iexpect
we'll see many more of these kinds of eps .
