Well OK then. I started off with the all encompassing he/she, but switched to the generic use of he to indicate either gender halfway through. BTW, I feel your pain - I used to be confused for a woman. On this ng that is. Before I used my name at the bottom. Really that's why. And really, I don't have a uterus.

i usually get confused for a he because of the e-mail address. that and the fact that my name, ashley, is a pretty gender neutral name. but you don't want to hear me bitch about my name... (i freakin' HATE Gone With the Wind)

Loretta.
No, actually, I used T Block as my handle and in my sig, so there was no definite gender there. For some reason everyone always thought I was a woman.
Oh, and nice to see you back, Anna. What do we have to do to keep you here? Chicken Wire? Handcuff you to the balcony?

That took a lot of courage. Everyone, let's give Ashley a hand.

Welcome to our happy little group, Ashley. And when I say happy, I mean like a crazy, dysfunctional kind of happy. But it works for us, most times :-)

<pondering> do i need to be a member of another crazy, dysfunctional group? i've already got my family... of course, they're usually not "happy".

Arguing is seldom fruitful; taking good advice is.
If you wish to present your thoughts in a coherent manner so that they can be read and understood - and to receive feedback on your thoughts, it's very good advice.
But here I end my rant.

As long as we are doing some sharing here, I'd like your take on this, Ashley. I named my youngest son Jesse for a number of reasons. It started with the meaning of the name. "By the grace of God". He was a gift; he was conceived without medical technology as were my first two. He was identified via amnio to be a boy, and due date of December 25 via sonogram. My husband was a carpenter at the time, and I was considered to be a sterile (barren) woman. Couldn't exactly call him the obvious, so I opted for a search of the meanings of names, came up with Jesse "by the grace of God". And since Jesse in the OT was the father of King David, and Jesus would come "from the root of Jesse", it seemed to fit with the wacky circumstances of his conception. Now this info I would never dump on a kid until he was an adult, but I thought Jesse was a great name. It conjured up images of very strong men - Jesse James, Jesse Owens (young 'uns may not know who he was), Jesse Jackson (before the scandel). But, as I learned from the time he was born, people asked me if my baby was a boy or a girl. I pointed out the spelling - JESSE versus JESSIE, but to no avail.
What do I have to look forward to with that name, judging from your experience?
> > > > > (i freakin' HATE Gone With the Wind)
Aah, John Doggett. Did they ever know that with this introduction of this character that it would alter the speech of the atxf participants. Everything freakin' everything now a days.

Just think of the positives, you don't have to worry about who to spend the holidays with (you can choose - and Ken's a great cook, so you don't have to do any holiday cooking, just bring the wine and perhaps an interested appetizer - but no calamari), you can leave before the bickering starts and join another feast in progress (Archie and Sean's melted butter "therapeutic" massage on Scully naked body - which by the way boys, will be very helpful for her stretchmarks - just don't start her lactating until *after* the baby is born. You don't want to rob the baby of critical colostrum), or you could join a Gizzie peep session with! hot chocolate. And there's always the Treatment Facility if you get too stressed out.
And, final note, what's your take on thongs, black silk boxers, and black pushup bra spandex slips as party attire?

i like the name Jesse, personally. it reminds me of Becca's boyfriend of Life Goes On, which was one of the first tv shows that my father and i watched together. then that reminds me of Picket Fences because i got him hooked on that show... wait. what was the question?
oh yeah. well, i would say that Jesse is probably going to go through various phases as he travels through school. i went through a peculiar phase where i wanted to be called by my middle name, lyn (another gender neutral name). i also made up a bunch of nicknames for myself, but none of them ever stuck. so, basically i would tell you to tell Jesse the story of his name as soon as you think he'll comprehend. it will at least reassure him that he wasn't named after Uncle Jesse on Full House and that it was well thought out and meant specifically for him. and eventually he'll grow up to respect and maybe even like the choices that his parents made for him. or he'll change it... :)

Couldn't call him the obvious? Are you sure you're latina? Why in my family alone, I have at least 3 first cousins named Jesus. Jesse is a good name, by the way :)

Yeah, but hubby is a gringo. Although when I visit home, the kids instantly transform from Carly to Carlita, Derek to Rico, and Jesse to Jesus (hay-zooos').

But you have to get with the times. The Census shows that the majority of this country is going to be named Jose, Juan, and Maria within the next 20 years. Our nicknames are cooler. Chepe is a better nicknmae than Joey. Chuy sounds better than Jess. I like Rico a lot as well. Of course, I should talk. I named my son after an Austrian nobleman, Maximilian I, who was duped into believing the people of Mexico wanted him to be their emperor.

I also gave my children middle names that were the maiden names of female parents/grandparents. Carly Zerquera Fischer, Derek Martignetti Fischer, Jesse MacGowan Fischer. I figure if Jesse really hates his name, he can call himself Mac Fischer.

It's a black pushup bra spandex slip one piece number (Jose ::thuds::). I don't wear it to *bed*, I wear it as party attire. Cuz it matches Archie's black silk boxers. But all that gets shed when we get nekkid.
Hope that helps. And thanks for the feedback on my son's name.

hey, that's why i qualified it with "pretty". in my high school there was a male wrestler named ashley. one of the boys in that lame ass boyband O-Town is named ashley (does he count as a boy?). when i was picking out colleges i got applications from all-boys schools. --ashley, thought duk's dad's name was daffy. or scrooge (as in Uncle from DuckTails). OBSSE, FPSSG :-)
