I must apologize for a note that a friend and I posted. You must realize
that we wrote this post late at night and we were both incredibly hyper.
I know, I know. That's no excuse. We both realize now that we have
offended some people and in the process made a fool out of ourselves. I
would now like to tell you our true feelings about that scene in the
episode "Jose Chung's: From Outer Space." And just so you know, I am
totally calm and in a right frame of mind.
As I recall, Mulders right arm is in view, but not necessarily his hand.
I still totally feel that he was breathing as any normal person would in
a normal situation. But still it is possible, I suppose and will admit,

The "lady-in-the-ice-cube" refers to a semi-famous magazine ad many years
ago. It is often cited when talking about subliminal advertising. The ad
pictured a glass with ice cubes in it. If you looked at the ice cubes just
right, you would see a sexually explicit picture of a woman. It's based on
the idea that your subconcious mind sees everything, but doesn't
necessarily process it the way your concious mind does. Therefore, as an
example, your concious mind sees a glass of liquid with ice cubes, and you
sub-concious "sees" the naked woman. Therefore, the theory is that some
people will get a "good" feeling when they see the product and purchase it,
and not be concious of ever seeing the naked woman in the ice cubes.
This is a very bare bones description, and it's been awhile since I
read anything on subliminals, but hopefully it gives you an idea about what
Mulder was talking about.

the ice cubes. I don't know about the naked lady one in particular, but
I've seen some where each ice cube had a pattern, and together they
spelled out "sex". I would guess that the "naked lady" would be a

I first saw this term in a book about subliminal suggestion
in advertising. The author discussed ways in which companies
use sex to sell products, in extremely subtle ways. The typical
consumer doesn't necessarily notice these "sexual cues" but their
subconscious does.
It is the author's theory that our subconscious responds to these
hidden sexual signs and causes our conscious self to purchase the
product. One of his primary examples is a liquor ad which shows
a drink with ice cubes. In one of the ice cubes he found a shadow
that looked alot like a naked woman (at least in his opinion).
It seems that his phrase "naked lady in the ice cube" caught on.
I think that the book was called "Subliminal Suggestions in
Advertising".

mid-70's, that detailed the use of subliminal messages/images in
advertising. It included the image Mulder refers to. Supposedly, many

to think of sex or other pleasant things and subconsciously associate
those pleasant things with the product. At any rate, the book, which was
mostly a paranoid attempt to prove that television is out to get us,

in Wet Wired might also manipulate an audience.

There might be more than 1 book on the subject, but the 1 that was
wildly popular in the 60s (or whenever it came out) was "The Hidden
Persuaders," by Vance Packard. That's the 1 that made phrases like

I for one was thrilled to hear the reference in Wet Wired. I had an
eccentric Trig teacher in high school who would occasionally get off
the subject (to our great relief) and he actually spent several days
showing us all this evidence of subliminal messages: everything from
nudes put into ice cubes, to 'sex' spelled out on ritz crackers. It
was amazing because the shimmery effect of ice lets the mind find just
about anything--a little bit like cloud watching. It was cool to

I'm not sure about the instruction manual, but it doesn't seem you have
to ask. The old lady didn't, the guy didn't, the fortune tellers didn't.
Also, I never said that I thunk Mulder was immortal, just that the idea
that Scully is immortal just because he said "she doesn't" doesn't
necesarily follow.

No-- CB didn't kill himself by autoerotic asphyxiation... he took some
pills and went to sleep with the bag over his head... Watch it again...

The movie you're talking about is called `The Turning', it was a
drama, not a porn (unless you're exceedingly prudish), rated "M" and
