Hi there everybody.  I recently found out that someone had plagiarized
my story "Forgiven," originally archived 96-04-03.  DO NOT ARCHIVE this
story.  It is already there.  I just wanted to repost the original story
to confirm that it is mine and an X-Files story written specifically for
Scully, not for the characters on Silk Stalkings as the alternate author
claimed.  The following is the original post I sent to the newsgroup.

This is for those of you who have listened avidly to every
track on "Jagged Little Pill."  If you're too thrifty or too lame
to have bought it or had a copy made for you, then don't
bother.  It has to do with track six on the CD, which, as you
may have guessed, is called "Forgiven."  As far as I know,
this one was actually condemned from showing up on the
playlist because it's anti-catholic.  At least, it won't make it
here in Yuppierepublicanpompuschristianityland, Texas.  

Generic disclaimer:  These people belong to CC and 1013,
not me.  If they did, I would be a lot richer than I am now.  
Special case disclaimer: "Forgiven" was shamelessly stolen
from the Godess Alanis.  I beg forgiveness and mercy.  The
other titles here are those of actual songs, which I did not
make up. (As if you didn't know that.)

Dana Scully blinked as she realized that she was
actually listening to the local alternative rock station.  She
didn't recognize any of the stuff on there, but most of it
sounded pretty catchy.  She giggled at the name of the song
"Wonderwall" and wrinkled her nose at the word "Hook."  
There was something about the new forms of music that she
couldn't stand for some reason.  Maybe she was just plain
old, but the work of underage artists didn't appeal to her.  
She knew that Silverchair were young, and there was the
pop artist of about fourteen years that had her own television
show on Paramount.  (She personally liked the Fox network
better.)

The ending chords of "Sattelite" were followed by
drumbeats and the strumming of a dark, subtle melody.  She
froze at the first few words.  "You know how us Catholic
girls can be/We make up for so much time a little too late."  
The singer sounded very young, her light, almost country-
style voice echoing in the background of the song.  The
melody burst into a second bit, and her voice began to
squeak in an oddly appealing way.  

"I never forgot it confusing as it was/ No fun with no guilt
feelings/ The sinners, the saviors, the loverless preists/ I'll
see you next Sunday."  

The melody burst outward in an amazing leap of volume.  
"We all had our reasons to be there/ We all had a thing or
two to learn/ We all needed something to cling to/ So we
did."

And suddenly everything was quiet again.  The drums
continued to prevail.  "I sang Alleluia in the choir/ Allelu,
Allelu, Alleluia/ I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious
man/ My brothers they never went blind for what they did/
But I may as well have/ In the name of the father, the skeptic
and the son/ I had one more stupid question."

"We all had our reasons to be there/ We all had a thing or
two to learn/ We all needed something to cling to/ So we
did."

In the next few moments, there was an air of disbelief in the
car, as though someone had just been told their deepest,
darkest secrets by a psychic.  "What I learned I rejected, but
I believe again/ I will suffer the consequence of this
inquisition/ If I jump in this fountain will I be forgiven?"

"We all had our reasons to be there/ We all had a thing or
two to learn/ We all needed something to cling to/ So we
did."

"We all had delusions in our heads/ We all had our minds
made up for us/ We had to believe in something/ So we did."

The rest of the trip was spent in silence, until Mulder leaned
over and finally broke it.  "What's wrong?"

"Everything she said is true.  This is my entire life, reduced
to a few lines of verse.*"

Okay, so it isn't the greatest story I've ever written, but I just
had to get the song out of my head before I went crazy.  Any

Some girl in the Silk Stalkings arena has plagiarized SEVERAL XF articles,
including my very silly and very XF-specific "How the Grinch Stole R'Hood."

So, if you see something that sounds familiar over there, odds are it IS
familiar - and taken without permission or credit of the authors.  Infuriating
to those of us whose stuff was posted!  And highly irritating to the fanfic
community in general, I'd imagine.

I've asked this person to remove my stuff.  If she doesn't, then... well... the
proper steps must be taken!

just rambling some possible solutions off the top of my head - because the
problem here is that it's in another arena and it's pretty certain that
there's no Big Person in Charge to complain to...

first, a public posting to that forum detailing in gory colour every
transgression and every example of the crime... public exposure is a good
place to start...

second, contacting the archivists (yah, all of them!) that have archived this
and the other stories as someone else's - they archived them without knowing
the truth, and a polite request to remove them from the archives shouldn't be
met with too much resistance - they probably will feel so foolish that
they'll do it without asking...

third, spread the info to other fanfic forums - publicise the person's name
and the titles in so many forums that if he/she/it decides to pull anything
like this again, they won't...

given that a legal avenue just ain't avaliable (or feasible, really...) the
next best thing would probably be a public declaration...

just my thoughts...

excuse me, gotta go watch the dancing in PMP again...

sigh...

I think that little plagiarism issue has cleared itself up!  The fanfic world
is small enough that people can catch each other.
