Okay, this is much lighter fare than Hold On was (thank you, by the way,
for all the responses!). This is sort of an X-File, no real romance, just
UST and some warm feelings. It's an exploration of a possibility that I
read into episodes like One Breath and Irresistible.
Disclaimer: I don't own Mulder and Scully--CC, 1013, and Fox do. I
promise not to profit from this story--I doubt anyone would pay me money
for it anyway--and I swear to return them to their rightful owners when
I'm done.

"Mulder, wake up."
Mulder rubbed the sleep from his eyes and tried to make sense of
the fact that his partner, who was in the adjoining motel room, had found
it necessary to call him at 4:32 in the morning and wake him up. This had
better be good.
"Scully, what's wrong?" He mumbled, eyes drifting closed to shut
out the horrible landscape paintings on the wall.
"Mulder, I need you to get over here."
"Okay," Mulder reluctantly rolled out of bed and headed for the
connecting door. He pushed it open and looked around Scully's empty room.
Suddenly, he was wide awake. "Scully, where the hell are you?"
"Mulder, I'll explain later. I'm at 66 Airport Road, do you have
a town map in your room? Oh, never mind, I have the car. You're going to
have to get a taxi."
Mulder held his cell phone to his ear with his shoulder and
scribbled down the address. "Scully, can I ask a stupid question?"
"Don't you always?"
"Very funny. Why aren't you in bed asleep? It's four o'clock in
the morning." Mulder pulled on his spare pair of jeans and grabbed a blue
henley. "Hang on, I'm calling for a cab on the room phone."
Mulder requested a cab as soon as possible, then resumed his
conversation with Scully. "So, Scully, are you ever going to tell me why
I'm meeting you in the middle of the night? If you wanted a secret
rendezvouz--"
"Mulder, I found her."
It took Mulder a minute to assimilate what she said. Cameron
Riley, the allegedly telepathic girl who'd been abducted under mysterious
circumstances a little under a week ago. Scully had found her? "Scully,
you found Cameron? Where? How?"
"Yes, I found Cameron. She's at 66 Airport Road and I just
happened upon her."
Mulder paused in the act of locking his door. "You happened upon
her? How the hell did you happen upon a missing girl at 4 a.m. when
you're supposed to be here asleep? She's been missing for how long? Six
days and you just bumped into her?" Mulder yanked the room key out of the
lock with more force than necessary.
"I couldn't sleep, so I went for a drive. I saw suspicious
activity--" Scully's voice dropped to a whisper, "Hang on."
"Scully? What's going on?" Mulder paced in front of the motel,
concentrating on the sounds from Scully's end.
After an interminable pause, Scully spoke. "Sorry, someone walked
by me and I didn't want to jeopardize my position. I'll meet you at the
rental car, okay?" Scully disconnected before Mulder could reply. Mulder
checked his urge to call her back, deciding not to risk blowing her cover
with a ringing cell phone.
Mulder squirmed the entire ten minute ride to Scully's location.
He jumped out of the cab several houses down, then walked quickly to their
rental Taurus parked along the edge of the road. Scully popped out of the
bushes next to the car to greet him.
"Hi, Mulder," she whispered. "Are you ready?"
"Scully, would you mind filling me in?" His sardonic tone was not
lost on Scully.
"Sorry," She apologized quickly. "I was driving past this house
when I noticed a man hanging around. I doubled back and saw three men,
one woman, and Cameron are in that one-story house. She's in the back
bedroom, and three of the four captors are asleep. The fourth is on guard
duty. If we go in quietly, we can get Cameron, then call for backup to
apprehend the four suspects." Scully's cheeks were flushed with
excitement as she explained the situation. Her auburn hair was pulled
back into a pony tail and she wore jeans and a Georgetown sweatshirt. In
the moonlight, she looked young enough to be an undergraduate.
Mulder pushed his observations aside and concentrated on the case.
"Scully, shouldn't we call for backup now?" At her quick negative
response, he shrugged and withdrew his gun. "Well, this appears to be
your show, so we'll play this by your rules. But as soon as we get
Cameron out, we're calling for backup."
Mulder and Scully silently approached the house, coming across the
guard star-gazing. They apprehended and handcuffed him, leaving him
locked in the car. Mulder snuck toward the back door while Scully
approached the front door. Scully slipped quickly through the house,
going directly to Cameron's room. She untied Cameron's hands and feet,
but left her gag on. Scully and Cameron met Mulder in the hallway, and
the trio silently exited the house.
When they reached the rental car, Scully untied Cameron's gag and
Mulder called for the local police.
"Oh, my God. Thank you so much!" Cameron said, rubbing her sore
wrists. "I was so scared. Those people were, like, testing me or
something. Like I was some kind of a freak." Cameron's bubbly nature had
been stifled for almost a week, and now it poured out in excess. Scully
and Mulder exchanged a look as Cameron rambled on.
The local police arrived and Mulder and Scully joined forces with
them to enter the house. They apprehended the three remaining suspects
with little trouble.
Scully kept an eye on Mulder the whole drive to Cameron's house.
Mulder was quiet and withdrawn, staring blankly out the window and
allowing her to drive. She could feel the anger coming off of him in
waves and had no idea how to breach his wall of silence.
Cameron, on the other hand, talked non-stop. Scully answered when
she was supposed to, but wasn't paying much attention to Cameron's actual
words.
*He's worried about you, you know,* Cameron said. Scully whipped
her gaze over to Mulder gauge his reaction to Cameron's words, but he
didn't appear to be listening. *Oh, don't worry. He can't hear me when I
talk to you this way.*
Scully's brow furrowed. "What way?"
Mulder spoke without looking at her. "Scully, we've been to
Cameron's house four times already, it's a left at the light." He popped
a sunflower seed into his mouth.
Cameron giggled, but, again, Mulder didn't react. *You can't talk
out loud or he'll be able to hear you. Just try and think your sentences
to me.* Cameron explained.
Scully's eyebrows jumped up dangerously close to her hairline.
"Excuse me?" she questioned.
"Scully, LEFT at the LIGHT. What is wrong with you?" Mulder
didn't spare her a glance as he chastised her, choosing to stare defiantly
at the trees whizzing by the window in the growing light.
Scully listened to Cameron's bright laughter in confusion. With
the mood Mulder was in, he'd have a fit if he could hear Cameron laughing
at him. So, didn't it logically follow that he couldn't hear Cameron?
So, how could Scully hear Cameron?
*Come on, Dana. Just try it once,* Cameron pleaded. *You can
hear me, and I know you can talk to me. You did it tonight.*
Scully's eyebrows shot up. She had done no such thing. Okay,
fine. She'd try it, if only to prove to herself that she was having
hallucinations due to sleep deprivation. In the back of her mind, a
childlike part of her was ready to burst with anticipation. She
concentrated on Cameron, then thought, *I did it tonight? When?*
Cameron's squeal caused Scully to jerk the steering wheel.
"Scully, would you like me to drive? Obviously you're a little
tired." His sarcasm was a bucket of ice water dousing Scully's good mood.
She pulled the car into the breakdown lane and jumped out. She paced a
little ways behind the car while Mulder unfolded himself from the
passenger seat. "Scully, where are you going?"
Cameron overheard Scully's thought, *Away from you, you pigheaded
man.* Aloud, Scully answered, "Just stretching my legs." She returned to
the car and climbed in the passenger side. Mulder pulled back onto the
road as Cameron resumed her conversation with Scully.
*See, I told you you could send. You're way stronger than me.
You were shouting.* The triumph was evident in her voice, or her
thoughts, as the case may be.
*So, you can hear me when I think something to you?* Scully
questioned. *Prove it. I'll tell you to say something out loud, and you
say it, okay?*
*Okay, Dana.*
Scully thought for a moment, trying to choose something obscure
that only she and Mulder would know. Finally, she sent the sentence to
Cameron and waited.
"Fat, little, white Nazi stormtrooper." Cameron piped up from the
backseat.
