The season hasn't even started here in New Zealand yet, although we did see
the mini-series / pilot a while back and they said the series would be shown
later.

It's not the 80's v at all... if you go in thinking it will be the show
will disappoint you. If you go in with an open mind the suspense is
great.

However, although it's being done much, much, slower, the show has been
introducing many of the main elements of the 80's V story line --
manipulation of public opinion, holding out the promise of wonderful
technological leaps, threatening to leave, going after people capable of
opposing them, etc. If the show stays on this track next season and
the story continues to progress, it could be a fine update to the 80's V.

So, you'd prefer "remake" instead of "update"? If that's your point, then
I'll agree and you can ignore the rest below. :)
From what I've seen, it's pretty much following the footsteps of "V", if
ever so slowly. Part of why it's progressing slowly is obvious -- the
original mini-series was only 6 hours long, and this series looks to be at
least two seasons of 20 1-hour episodes, for 40+ hours, so there's a great
deal of room for additional material not in the original. However, the
overall plot and themes are developing along the same lines. Sure, many
character names are different (Ana instead of Diana), the uniforms are blue
instead of red, the shuttles and the main ships look different, etc., and
obviously it's a different cast, but many (not all) of the main story
elements from the original are now in place (even if only just as of the
latest episode).

I'd prefer an "update" that actually fits with the original show, rather
than something that makes lots of silly changes and re-uses the same name
for what in reality is a completely different, usually barely
recognisable, in-name-only show ... which unfortuantely is exactly what
99% of the "remake" / "update" shows coming out of Hollyweird these days
are. :-(

Hang in there... the show is great. Don't go into it thinking that it's
the "v" of the 80's... it's something new... and full of suspense and
mystery. We know theyare lizards but what else???

And those are usually the worst at being barely recognisable. If the fools
in Hollyweird want to make a new show, then they should make a NEW show
rather than butcher and existing one. All they need to do is give their
new "version" a different name ... instead of "V" they can call it "B" for
"based on V". ;-)

So far the only thing I have seen that even resembles the old "V" is
that they are lizards... and even that is not clear since the set
designers have said that the mothership is designed as a "cobra head"
and the shuttles are a "python" head.
They are reptiles... but I am starting to think after the way Anna
showed her fangs and the dude that was John May's stepson's girlfriend's
fingers popped out as claws that they are some sort of shapeshifters as
well... or at least their bodies have been compressed and manipulated.

That's not much of a spoiler... it was established in the second episode
that human skin is cloned over their lizard exterior... but the skin
also seems to have nerves and use their blood.
I've also seen evidence that they shapeshift... i.e. Anna's fangs and
the chick's claws.
