Hi again! These are this week's ones, with the usual disclaimer blah blah
blah subjective mumble mumble getting old yadda yadda lori don't read any
further... ;-)

DEANA CARTER: EVERYTHING'S GONNA BE ALRIGHT (Capitol) A great new one from
'the fresh new voice of country music.' I only knew her because I bought her
album Did I Shave My Legs For This?, it had such a great title! Deana is no
Shanna Twain (who's also great), this is 100% country music alright. So, of
course nothing truly original, just the same old thing but very well done
(sometimes on the cheesy side, but that's C&W, right?). The version of
Melanie (Peace Will Come According to Plan)'s Brand New Key is great. BTW,
this is the last warning to Peggy: answer soon or I'll go for this Deana
girl!

Mood Meter: 'I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car / Don't go
too fast but I go pretty far / For somebody who don't drive I've been all
around the world / Some people say I've done all right for a girl.'

Deana Carter official web site: www.deana.com

Deana Carter serves as spokeperson for the National Kidney Foundation (no
URL given).

PHIL COLLINS: ...HITS (Face Value / Atlantic-WEA). Who's Phil Collins? The
one who made a great first album (Face Value), a very good pop album (No
Jacket Required), or the one Tory-voter who makes cynical songs about
homeless people and drum-machine versions of The Times They Are A Changin'?
Here we get both, though much more biased on the second. After all, that's
where his greatest hits come from. As Q Magazine said some years ago,
*somebody* must like him since he sells millions even if they say the
contrary... Oh, and BTW: Phil, don't put your dirty hands on Cyndi Lauper!
Her great True Colors becomes a bland terrible cheesy ballad on your hands!

Mood Meter: 'Oh Lord, isn't there anything anybody can do?'

THE STYLE COUNCIL: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF THE STYLE COUNCIL (5 CD's Box
Set, Polydor / PolyGram) A compilation of everything The Style Council ever
recorded, I have to say that for me this is Record of the Year! Though I
don't quite understand what market is there for these box sets that are only
for people who are already big fans of the band and probably own yet 90% of
what's there (then again, I bought it, no?), this has made me obsessed the
whole last week. My great liking for Paul Weller's new solo records almost
made me forget how great this band was, even if they ended up being
criticized by everyone -after all he was the sod who broke up The Jam,
wasn't him? Having said all this, I must add that I don't think this will be
of interest for people who didn't know them at the time; though 95% are
great songs, they may sound truly dated for many, musically and especially
the lyrics -they were always posing as dilettantes while they raved on
incessantly about Socialism and especially against Margaret Thatcher. One
must remember 'The Horror! The Horror!' that was that to understand. The
only downer about this box set is, it contains their never before published
last album, 'Modernism: A New Decade,' -it would be great to say about it
'How stupid the record company was not releasing it when it was a
masterpiece,' but, well, to tell the truth it is basically crap. Oh well...

Mood Meter: 'You don't have to take this crap / You don't have to sit back
and relax / (...) Are you gonna be threatened by / The Public Enemy No 10 /
(...) You see, things can change / Walls can come tumbling down!'

Still in the Waiting Room (not listened to yet): The Fireman: Rushes / John
Lennon: The John Lennon Anthology / Linda McCartney: Wide Prairie / Dolly
Parton: Hungry Again / UB40: Labour of Love III / Dionne Warwick: Dionne
Sings Dionne... Getting pretty crowded there...

'I could chase around for nothing to be found
But why look for something that is never there
I may get it wrong sometimes
But I'll come back in style.'

Does someone like VH1 or what? I do agree with you about the THE STYLE COUNCIL
stuff. Here's a list of some stuff I picked up this week. I was just messing
around about the VH1 stuff. I just hate Phil Collins. LOL.

1.) Jon Spence Blues Explosion - Acme
In my opinion this is his best. Great trash blues meets hip hop.
2.) R.E.M. - Up
This album isn't very "up". It's kinda sad. But there best album in years.
3.) Beck- Mutations
This album is closer in sound to ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE then ODELAY. It was
produced by the same guy who produced Ok Computer for Radiohead. Nice cosmic
sounds on this one.
4.) Spiritulized - Live At The Albert Hall and Portishead - PNYC
These 2 live albums are outstanding. I got promos for both last week and they
haven't left my player. I think they both come out on Nov. 10. Do yourself a
favor and grab up.
5.) Nuggets- Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968 [BOX
SET]
This 4 disc set has alot of great stuff on it as well as alot of really bad
stuff. Only for the fan of the Psychedelic era, like myself.

Well there's my two cents.

I couldn't tell whether you were serious or joking here (and in the rest of
the post) so I am answering this seriously. Forgive me if I am giving you
info that you already know...

VH1 is the grown up MTV. Instead of your Marilyn Manson, Puff Daddy,
popular with the high schoolers type of music, you get Sarah McLachlan,
Billy Joel, stuff more on the mellow side. They actually don't show very
many music videos anymore (but then neither does MTV). VH1 has a lot of
really great shows. They produce several different documentaries that they
show. Legends - about great influential artists of the past (legends! duh!)
(examples- The Doors, Tina Turner, Jim Croce) and Behind the Music - which
can be about almost anybody (exp- Boy George, Milli Vanilli, Andy Gibb).
They also have a Storytellers series where artists come on and sing their
songs and talk about the process of writing them. And they show a lot of
"live" music, like their Live from the Hard Rock Cafe series, which has
Chris Isaak on last Saturday.

VH1 reminds me of a radio station we have here in Portland, KINK, their
motto is "True to the Music".

Many thanks, you just gave me the *little* excuse I needed for buying it!
:)

You are normally *very* clear, so I think it was just me being confused by
my own thoughts and not anything you actually wrote.

You are most welcome! My pleasure. Based on the musical interests you have
written about, it sounds like you would probably like it very much.
