I'm seriously considering jettisoning my Time Warner SA 8300HD DVR in
favor of a Tivo, so I'd like some advice on how the cabling would
work.

Block diagram: http://tinyurl.com/7qb7kqn

I'm pretty sure I've got the basic config down; the only thing I'm not
sure about is what kind of splitter to use and which outputs to
connect to what.

I have two splitters in the drawer:

1) 3-Way Balanced 1GHz......... -5.5db / -5.5db / -5.5db

2) 3-Way Unbalanced 1GHz..... -3.5db / -7.5db / -7.5db

Which one should I use (if either) and which outputs go with which
component?

Thanks!

Whatever splitter you use, make sure that the cable modem's signal power
remains below 55dBmV for the upstream level and not too much below 0dBmV
for the downstream. Otherwise, you might have problems with your
Internet or VOIP service.

The web server built in to TWC's standard-issue Motorola cable modems
will display this information if you type (or paste) the following
address into your web browser: <http://192.168.100.1/>.

It's best to check signal levels during the warmest part of the day. If
necessary to preserve good signal levels for the modem, put it on the
preferred (-3.5dB) leg of the three-way splitter or even use a couple of
two-way splitters in series, with the modem connected to the first
(upstream) splitter.

I'm curious why you would want/need a TWC "box" (model number ?) along
with your TiVo (which one ?)

Anyways, if the TWC box and TiVo can live with -7.5dB, go with the
unbalanced splitter, with the -3.5dB leg going to the modem. If not,
go with the balanced splitter, but monitor the signal levels at the
modem.

Perhaps to have 4 tuners? I could never survive with just two tuners!

It's my understanding that although the Tivo can replace your cable
box, for VoD and PPV content, you'll still need the box. Am I wrong?

Thanks, think I'll go with the unbalanced.

I can't remember the last time I used PPV, but I use VoD often.

That's why I asked which TiVo he has. The TiVo Premiere Elite has 4 tuners!

It is my understanding that the VOD limitation has changed or is changing.

From the Tivo FAQ:

"NOTE: Unfortunately, it is not possible at this time to view or
record Video on Demand (VOD) programs with a Series3, TiVo HD, or
Premiere box. You will need to rent a cable box from your cable
company and use a separate connection for this content."

What date is "at this time" ??

Check for up-to-date info. Call your cable company and try to talk
with someone other than a Level 1 customer service representative.
