The film companies are probably investing in scanning their libraries
into HD for the channel and as an investment in future HD releases.
It's one of the channels offered by Voom, an all HD service off of
Echostar's sats. Some cable companies are picking up Voom content to
withstand DTV's launch this year of their new HD services, which will
put over 100 new HD channels on the lineup by next spring. About 50 to
70 before the end of this year. The reason there's no commercials is
that Voom is subscription and Comcast, Cox, whoever is your provider is
picking up the tab to beef up their HD content. Don't expect it to last
forever. Once they've established retention of subscribers and get
other content up, it'll be dropped or moved to a higher, fee based, tier
of service.

Screw Sci-fi. Give me Porno in HD...
Why not have both?
I now picture a naked extraterrestrial, six arms, scaly,
slightly green, insectoid features... nah, it's not doing
anything for me at all.

You're answering a post that must be over a year old? We've since
switched to FIOS, and I think it's gone now anyway. When they first started
up, it was great. Then it became reruns of slasher flicks.

I'm certain that my percent of stargate newsgroup posts that discuss stargate
episodes or possible future stargate events is greater than that!

You forgot to include the percentage of
posts that were on-topic
But then...

Weighing Our Galaxy
How do you measure a galaxy you're stuck in the middle of? You can't exactly,
but you can get some pretty good estimates. Astrophysicists used a large sample
of data from stars in the galactic halo to calculate that the Milky Way, earth's
own galaxy, weighs slightly less than 1 trillion solar masses. Since a solar
mass is equal to the mass of the sun, our galaxy weights about 1 trillion times
as much as the sun.
