Rush has been complaining all episode about the Destiny running out of
power, and it has finally done so about 25 minutes into the episode.
All the lights are out, and the ship has dropped out of FTL drive.
How is it that we can see the faces of Rush and his companion if all
the lights are off? After all, the ship is in interstellar space. No
signs of a nearby sun.

To refuel the Destiny, the crew manages to maneuver it so that it passes
through the atmosphere of a nearby gas giant. I presume that it takes
in hydrogen to power fusion reactors. However, when it emerges, it
happens to be headed straight for a star! Why can't the crew just
maneuver it again so that it will miss the star? After all, the
Destiny's altitude jets should now be working.
Since the Destiny now has power again, why doesn't it just veer away
from that star on its own and return to FTL?

Destiny doesn't have power. There was no sudden activation of systems as the
ship skimmed the atmosphere. It didn't enter the atmosphere to gather fuel
you idiot, it did it as a braking/slingshot manoeuvre in order to reach the
inner solar system.
Now for MY thoughts on the next episode...
Solar scoop. Good source of fuel, superheated plasma.

They have flashlights and that was established in the scene with Sgt.
Riley recharging the batteries. The scene at the end was in the
shuttle, which was established to have separate power in the scene where
Col. Young talks to the two scientists and Eli.

No, it's going to hit the sun. It's unpowered.
The ship is evidently trying to get the Icarus people to one of the
inhabitable planets in the system, which it used the gas giant to
position itself for. Either they'll use the shuttle or there's some sort
of beaming tech that will come online to do the job.
Destiny has some sort of AI at work, it knows the situation and it knows
what the people aboard need, and it tries to help as best it can.

Life support and related systems were still online. They had a scene
spelling that out.

don't see how they could do anything with it without killing somebody
else, unless that door problem is now solved. They did say he isn't

puzzle tests. Never has it been this difficult to access Ancient technology.

My thought, too, was that this was the way Destiny would refuel. I
was wondering why no one on the ship was even SPECULATING that that
might be the purpose. Don't any of them read SF?
Still, it needn't be an instantaneous process where the lights come on
as they round the planet. There may need to be some processing of the
fuel, or they may still need to "get into the main systems" to
actually TURN ON the power plant that would use that newly-stored fuel
(instead of the current "emergency batteries" system that they are
apparently on right now).
For them to be headed directly towards that sun afterwards is such a
low probability (if a result of chance) that I have to think it's
deliberate maneuvering by Destiny. Does Destiny "need a light" from
that sun to start up its fusion plants?

from a level point on the ship, not from a docking port like the one
shown where the politician died.

I think that shuttle thing is a periodic departure, I'm sure I saw one leave
the ship at the end of the first episode too.
Maybe the ship has a manufacturing facility on board they've not found yet
and the thing we saw leaving was a probe, possibly to distribute DHDs to the
stargates in the system they just passed. I'm sure we'll find out sooner or
later.

Why say it couldn't be a refueling pass? I never indicated that the
SG people headed them there. They have shown Destiny to possess a
certain amount of autopilot and decision-making capabilities.
Presumably, once the power level dropped below a certain point it
could use some sort of "Standard Recharge Protocol." This could
happen whether or not someone "told" the ship they needed more power
(like they "told" it they needed help on the CO2 problem.)

See above. Nothing here indicates the ship can't do that. If it's
been working on its own for nearly a million years, do you think it
must have started with a million years of fuel or do you think it
might have had some way to gather fuel along the way? I think a
system to gather hydrogen along the way beats having a fuel tank the
size of Jupiter.

No, they were GUESSING that what is was doing was aerobraking. They
were also GUESSING that they would come out near the rocky inner
planets. Of course, the INITIAL guessing was done by the people who
had labeled things backwards. Rush came in and made a deduction from
the fact that everyone was smiling - but not from looking at readouts.

Well, the Lt. could have been talking about a change from "toward the
gas giant" to "toward the inner system". What Rush actually said was
that it had changed their course more that they had HOPED. Not more
than they had a display for, not more than they had calculated,
nothing to indicate that they had had an actual specific course change
locked in. Just that they had HOPED it would bring them near the
inner planets.

I'm wished that I had the opportunity to fall asleep while
trying to watch this episode. Unfortunately for me, I was at work
watching this on Haul and have to agree with you -- it's a horrible
episode.
Funny though as I'm trying to respond to this, who does a
cameo? The director of this episode -- Peter DeLouise. Oh and look,
it's LDP back on Destiny... Blah.

I ignored the gratuitous shower sequence. I'm finding that I
can't even properly love to hate Dr. Smith. I just believe that he
needs to be dragged out to a room some where and shot quietly in the
back of the head and then jettisoned out of some airlock.

I'm not liking this whole "my mother the car" attitude that
the writers continually try to foist that Destiny's "sentient" or
self-knowing enough to be in the right place at the right time. What's

Yes. He's early first season Dr. Smith; the psychotic murderer who
should have been jettisoned out the airlock of the Jupiter 2. The
humorless bastard that sabotaged the ship, that murdered a security
guard to cover it up, that rigged John's parajets to make him fall
hundreds of miles to a fiery death while his children watched, that
programmed the robot to murder the Robinson children at the first
opportunity.
Jonathan Harris was right to turn Smith from murderer to clown, on the
theory that otherwise they'd *have* to kill him off. They're going to
have to do the same thing with Rush, or Baltarize him and have him make
appearances from the brig.

Not to mention the 10 years of inactive reserve status (to be called

I am still hopeful. It clearly has a way to go to get up to even the

the end of the first episode. I completely admired Sam and lusted

I think it knows what it is doing, and intends to recharge/refuel somehow.
This process could, however, be dangerous to the people even if not to
the ship, or even to the ship if it's a desperation maneuver (kill or cure).
But the ship has shown some concern about the people, in finding them
life-support materials. Even if it's only out of self-interest (it needs
people aboard that can repair it because most of the mobile robots have
broken down, or whatever).
The clock assumes new significance. Besides perhaps being a countdown
based on how much air they had left, it might also have been based on
the low power levels; perhaps the ship would have reached that sun and
refueled itself before blacking out if its departure hadn't been delayed
by Eli sticking his arm into that stargate.

I did less than 5 months of Inactive Reserves - all prior to going to
Boot Camp. I then did 8 years, 3 months and 28 days of consecutive
Active Duty. This concluded my obligation to the military.

It's what I tried to do. Google mis-attributed (or someone snipped

I was on Active Duty for 3 years plus a little. I was given a medical
discharge. Eight years later, I was called back up for Desert Storm,
because when I separated, the NCOIC made it very clear, that we could
be called up to return for up to 10 years. Inactive reserve status
only kicks in once you separate from active duty (or 10 years service
in Reserves or National Guard, I think).
Are you talking about DEP? I was in DEP for 8 months before going
into boot camp, because of the job I wanted in the AF.

You can get out of the DEP program with little problems, you can't
ever get out of the post service inactive reserves.
And not according to the helicopter pilot who 'resigned' because he
didn't believe in the reasons behind going to Iraq (not an officer,
btw), a few months before Bush sent ordered us to go (but pretty much
everyone knew we'd go), he'd served 10 years, and they made him come
back in or go to jail. He was out, working his civilian job, living
the good life for 5 or 6 months, and got called back in.

The facts remain. I got out after less than 9 years of combined service
- Active Duty and IRR (on DEP). I was *not* put in the IRR upon
discharge. They could *not* make me come back in.
And, before you ask, I have an Honorable Discharge with a re-enlistment
code of RE-R1.
