Do the changes this season in Major Kira's appearance bother you?
You should know that these changes were initiated at the behest of
Viacom,

A letter-writing campaign saved Star Trek from cancellation in 1967. The
adventure continues. The changes to Major Kira's appearance are sexist,
and negate all the positive female images this character has embodied for
the past three years. Kira was all-woman WITHOUT the "feminine"
trappings. The fans thought so. Nana Visitor thought so. The DS9
producers thought so. Viacom is the problem.

This fundamental change to Major Kira sets a precedent. The Viacom suits

Address
Dear Mr. Executive:
I am writing to express my objection to the changes in the
character of Major Kira Nerys on [Paramount's syndicated series] Star
Trek: Deep Space Nine. For three years, Major Kira has been a symbol of
strength and hope for the viewers of that show. This year, however, I'm
dismayed to find that changes have been made to her physical appearance
which undermine the very nature of the character.
There appears to be some concern that the Major, with her
no-nonsense style and short hair, presents an image of womanhood that
many find unfeminine and perhaps offensive. The truth of the matter is
this character, an ex-Freedom Fighter who survived a demoralizing
occupation of her homeworld, is a strong woman who is revered and admired
by the other
characters and fans for these very reasons -- she is tough, she doesn't
pull any punches, and she does not suffer fools. Imagine my dismay, then,
to see her this season. Gone are the functional boots, replaced with
heels no other character, ultra-feminine or not, is forced to wear. Gone
is the simple hairstyle that augmented her character. Instead we now see
a parody of the Major Kira we have come to know and love. She has ceased
to be a symbol of strength and hope -- no longer revered, and admired
only for the way she fills out her new, skin-tight jumpsuit.
Therefore, I am asking you to reconsider the changes you have
made to the appearance of Major Kira Nerys and to restore her footwear,
hair style, and uniform to the earlier version that is more in keeping
with the
character's development. Part of the reason I watch this show each week,
as
I have for the past three years, is because of the continuity of the
characters. I would like to continue to watch this show for the next
three
years. Major Kira is a vital part of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and to
erode the integrity of her character does a disservice to the actress,
the
character and those of us who are inspired by and support the show each
week.
I thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don`t think that we have reason to worry. I would worry if Kira would
suddenly start wearing Deanna Troi`s revealing clothing on duty but in
spite of the changes Kira is still a very natural looking woman, a bit
more feminine, yes, but natural. And anyway, more important is the
character and not what a person is wearing! Kira is still the brilliant
character I liked from the very beginning. "Indiscretion" and "Starship
Down" are impressive examples, I think!
This discussion reminded me of Deanna Troi`s problem. In essence, Marina
Sirtis said, it was in a way funny. After Deanna didn`t wear the
revealing clothing any more but a normal uniform, she suddenly got more
brains. Well, I will be watching closely if Kira will deteriorate but so
far I see no sign of it. And as long as this isn`t happening, I don`t
mind her new look.

Major Kira is softening up a little. The war of independence is over, and
so she's able to evolve from a guerilla into a peacetime officer. The
transition is realistic, and yes, she looks a heck of a lot better too.

I would like to add something to my contribution. I have just got my new
IDIC newsletter (Great Britain) and in it you can read the following:
"* Ron D. Moore - compiled from some messages Ron posted
Kira`s new uniform was NOT an effort to add sex appeal by some nefarious
Viacom-types. The truth is that the actress herself asked for a costume
change because the old one was uncomfortable and restricted her movement
and performance.
Nana`s version of this and mine are probably not as far apart as it may
sound. Nana definitely was complaining about her costume and how it
restricted her performance in a meeting with the show`s producers. It
was this conversation which led directly to the new costume. Now, maybe
in her mind she doesn`t consider this her asking for the change, but we
certainly did. And in any case, it was this meeting, not a
Viacom/Paramount cabal which caused there to be a wardrobe change.
Yes, we probably would change all the Bajoran costumes if we had the
cash. (Not a definitive yes, because we knew it wasn`t a possibility). I
am very puzzled by this "babefied Kira" thing. We gave her a (better)
costume and monkeyed with her hair and makeup a little. She`s still the
same kick-ass first and ask questions later Kira we`ve seen for over
three years. We hung Picard naked in a Cardassian torture room and no
one thought we were pushing him as some kind of S&M poster boy. We`re
not out to destroy the character and we wouldn`t let anyone else do ti
either. I think Kira`s costume looks great and that her whole look is
great this year. `Nuff said"
I can only agree to what everyone else (and me) wrote so far in this
thread: I like Kira`s new look and the development of her character so
far. I am mainly curious about "Crossfire". It must be a great episode!

Ron Moore said that? Sorry, Ron, but apparantly, you've been
smoking Brannon Braga's "happy" stash if you thought it was a good move
to do that. I thought the stuff about that damn outfit came from the
horse's (Nana's) mouth.
I also hate that outfit. I've thought DS9's been nosedivibng since
last season, and between Julian shoved in the back (or playing out
macho fantisies), Worf, the overuse of the Defiant, and
Founder-paranoia were bad enough -- that damn outfit is the topper!

Forget it. Kira shacks up with Shaakar (a piece of wood), and Odo
gets really down about it.

I was directly in the middle of the "discussion" with Ron D. Moore as
seen above. Despite what Ron may have said, Nana was NOT happy with the
changes as they've been put up, especially the boots, I told Ron so, and
he essentially called me a lier. Nana told ME directly to my face how
unhappy she was about the changes, and had fought with the TPTB and lost.
She confirmed that the "babification" was from higher up that the Trek
producers, high in Paramount and Viacom.
She has eventually relented to "justify" the changes from an actor's
stand point.

I can live with the hair (although I still have a hard time believing
that she would bother, at least not every day). I can even live with
the cat suit -- it doesn't look uncomfortable. But the HEELS? She's a
military officer, she's a practical woman -- the heels have got to GO!
They're ludicrous!

Yes, and in "Return to Grace" did you see all the fancy editing they did when
Kira took the knife from Ziyal (sp?) and then "attacked" her? Even Visitor, a
former dancer, couldn't have kept her footing in three-inch heels to make the
necessary moves.
One wonders if any of TPTB could wander down a street in South-Central LA at
midnight wearing 3-inch heeled boots and feel confident that they could defend
themselves with a Bowie knife if attacked . . .and if they couldn't, how can
they expect Kira, a military officer, to do so?

others that she DOES know how to defend herself . . . which is why she never

)Sustainable agriculture takes root with your support
And I'm happy she can make her own decisions about what she wants to wear.
What is all this crap about what women wear on tv shows being sexist, are we
going to nitpick every detail of what women do on their jobs. Ok. It's a job
that gets seen by millions of people, fine. But in other jobs where people
(women or men) do not get noticed or pestered by millions of fans, do you think
it makes that much of a difference? Anotherwords, let's mind our own business.
If it's her choice, let her do what she wants. If it's not her choice, then
maybe fan support would help.

Well, I guess you don't discriminate about "nosing" in others people's business
when it comes to either gender.
|> >Worf, the overuse of the Defiant, and
|> >Founder-paranoia were bad enough -- that damn outfit is the topper!
I'd grant you that those 2 episodes weren't very special, but try to tell me
any other this season which is as bad. Or has ANY bad aspect of them at all.
|> That's an... "interesting"... opinion, since pretty much everyone else is
|> |>awed at how incredibly good this season of DS9 has been compared to last
|> |>season... or to ANY single season of ANY trek show, for that matter.
I wouldn't go that far to compare it to all of Star Trek, for I feel TNG has
some good seasons. But I suppose this season has had consistently good episodes
since the kick ass start. Started out with a bang and is continuing that
theme.
Except for the founder episodes.
I think you don't understand. Ron D. Moore claimed that it was Nana's
choice to change the outfit. That was a blatent untruth. Nana herself
told me that she had asked for a "minor" change to relieve the
constrictive nature of the old costume but was VERY unhappy with the
result, especially the boots. She fought very hard to get it changed back
or to the minor changes she WANTED. No avail.
So, it was NOT her choice, and the very point of this appeal is to GET
the fan support you are talking about.
Nana's previous uniform had the unfortunate effect of accentuating the,
er...um....breastical region.
So maybe the spike-heeled boots are a bit much. But the rest of the "new"
uniform is much better than the previous one. And the Bajoran "dress"
uniform is a heckuva lot better than the Federation "dress"
uniforms...(Especially those dress dresses in the first few seasons of
TNG.)
By the way, maybe the spike heels have more to do with the fact that
everyone on this show is very tall. Nana is probably the shortest one.
Yeah, that's what I figured too. Here she is, first officer with a new
Klingon officer on board. Maybe Major Kira decided she needed some help
"standing up" to Worf--despite how impractical such footwear would be for
someone who occasionally has to fight the bad-guys, not to mention, run.
Tod Abbott.

Nana is 5 ft 8. By no means short. The rest of the cast (besides Armin)
is quite tall though.
Nana hates the boots.

Absolutly 100% agree!

Well, I guess Kira and Odo COULD enroll in Starfleet if they
wanted to but why? Yes Bajor and the Federation are getting friendlier
and friendlier but that doesn't change the fact that DS9 is still a
Bajoran station under Federation Administration. Kira and Odo are
recognized by the Bajoran government as officers and they work WITH the
Federation and not necesarily UNDER it.
No way! I will admit that the new look this season (4) is not quite
as good as the others were, the one she should go back to is the one
she had in the second season, when her hair is more compact. Not all
this puffy hair all over the place....

I doubt if Kira & Odo would have to join Starfleet, go to the Acadamy,
etc. Starfleet is a UN like military arm. Just like the US has its own
army, politicians, etc. so would the Bajorans.

If she chose to join Starfleet, maybe -- that doesn't seem in her character.
The main reason she wouldn't be a Commander is because Major is the
equivalent to Lt. Commander.

Frightening concept there. No, the UFP is exactly what it's name says --
it's a federation, not just an alliance (you wouldn't describe the USA as an
alliance, would you?) As such, it has a unitary military; the planetary forces
you describe would be more like the equivalent of state police.

We're talking apples and orangutans here -- O'Brien's in Starfleet.
Most people in Starfleet are enlisted.
Kira's a commissioned officer of the Bajoran Militia, but Odo's not military
at all. He's a civilian cop, a constable with deputies, which is most appropriate
to policing a station under mostly civilian jurisdiction, full of mostly civilians.
Was I the only one who thought it odd that Earth didn't have
any visible organs of government, seperate military structures,
etc. from the UFP in "Homefront."?
Oh my! I went back and watched that episode not long ago and her hair
looked awful! The short doo suits her better...I'm not talking about her

And well she should! With some of the things she has to do, and just

I agree. I mean c'mon, that suit is *supposed* to be a military uniform.
Have you ever seen a military uniform with high-heels? High heels were
created to add height and give women a feeling of power, (Katherine De
Medici crweated them to make her taller than the men who served under her)
but in a battle or emergency situation they could mean a broken ankle. I
could deal if they were just part of her dress uniform.

Gee,101452.774, I'm sorry to burst your bubble but in TNG's last season,
the then-newly promoted Lt. Ro left Starfleet to join the Maquis. I'll
leave out that particular episode's plot; suffice to say she's not going
to be in a Starfleet episode anytime soon.
Unless, of course, we suddenly discover that she's been on Voyager all
this time. Now _that_ would be a plot twist.

They initially seemed to seperate her out from the rest of the crew. They
made her into the cheerleader of the ship, she was never taken seriously as
an actual officer, therefore they didn't care about how professional she
looked. Yes, I believe that while they had her in the fancy and not
military uniforms, she was wearing heels. Once they finally began to take
her seriously and put her into a uniform, they cahnged her footwear into the
uniform boot. hope this helps.

No need to explain where Lt. Ro's been. Voyager's made no effort to
account for every single Maquis crew member since the show began; she
simply may have been busy on another part of the ship. :)
And why shouldn't she want to return? Nothing wrong with a steady
paycheck. Hey, if Worf can do it, why not Ro?
There are lots of things to consider when putting together a television
series.
Actually if you watch the TNG episodes of the later years
you will find that Lt Troi was constantly out of uniform so to speak.
Her lowcut dress and heels were part of her "casual" uniform as head
shrink of the Enterprise. In the epsiode where Picard got captured by
the Cardassians, the acting Captain made her wear the official
Starfleet uniform and viola! no heels, no cleavage! They (the writers)
never really explained how she got away with the uniform change. But
she's healthy looking, an empath and the captain does get lonely at
times so you figure that out....

Baloney. Michael Dorn is hardly hard up after the NG series and movie, but
he was willing to accept three more years of make-up that's a lot worse
than Forbes'.
Why shouldn't she come back if asked? Her acting career hasn't exactly
gone gangbusters since her ST character joined the Maquis. A previous post
said she turned down the DS9 role that eventually went to Nana Visitor. If
that's true, that's gotta be the dumbest TV-career move since Shelley Long
left "Cheers."
As for the "Voyager" writers copping out - face it, they've been doing it
since the show debuted. The whole point was to put them in a situation
away from the Federation. Yet they meet a Romulan, find a colony of
humans, try to defuse a torpedo from the Alpha Quadrant, and - the coup de
gras - have a visit from Cmdr. Riker and Q. Even one of Voyager's nemeses
is a Cardassian!
At least having Ro on Voyager is a _believable_ premise. And she'd be more
interesting to watch than any of the other lame-o's on the crew.
