Marine Corps recruiting #s

I know that after the booming success of The X-Files, the number of people
applying to join the Bureau went up a lot. I'm wondering if the Corps has
experienced similiar rise in recruits. If the general population of these
United States is being convinced by shows like Space that the Marine Corps
is the best of the services (which it is! Hurrah! [does anyone else think
I'm practically inviting the flames here?=)] ), perhaps their recruiting
numbers have gone up. Could someone possibly find out? It could help if
their numbers have gone up, to give us some leverage with getting the
Marines on our side. Recruiters DO have to meet a quota, y'know...
This has been another random, most likely useless thought brought to you by...

I just had a thought....tangential at best...isnt it sad that "Booming
Success" is applied to a show that is barely in the top 50? I mean,
lets face it. SAAB, with a decent timeslot (Like when 60 damn minutes
ISNT ON) and a similar marketing campaign is good competition for the
"Booming Success" categorization. And yet Fox, despite the obvious, is
showering Crawford for his "Booming Success" WHICH OCCURRED DUE TO CULT
ADORATION. Xfiles was simply another fox enigma heading for the
Bandwidth Bad Boy closet.
I think Xfiles is a great show. I do not intend to Mock greyhound,
either. I am merely pointing out something that probably has nothing
to do with anything. Im just wasting time till my show comes on in 19
minutes....

I'm a Lance Corporal in the U.S.M.C. and they urge us to recruit all
the time....I haven't noticed a signifigant change in our recruiting
numbers.
If the show is causing people to recruit, it's most likely Officer
recruiting that would be going on....to fly for the Marines you have to
have been through O.C.S.....so I really wouldn't be able to gauge it
properly.....being enlisted and all.

My use of booming success was based on the show's exposure. There's narry
a person I talk to who hasn't seen the X-Files. And the stores are just
chock full of XF merchandise. I was a member of that small cult following
that got XF off the ground. When I say "booming success," what I mean is
that people can't seem to get enough. Maybe we should help Space achieve a
booming success of its own, eh?

1. Did the chess board knight ads cause any increase in recruiting, and for
which class of recruit?
2. Can you tell from a movie's release date that it is causing an increase
in recruitment?
3. Which movies bring 'em in the door?
4. Did SAAB ever bring in any recruits, not officers but soldiers?
5. We are so fond of using Semper Fi and Hoo-Yah...Do active marines use
these phrases in conversation or e-mail? Or do you foks use other phrases?
What do NATO or UNFOR troops say, if anything?

We get new people into my unit occasionally....the only time I've ever
heard of a movie really 'bringing them in' was when I was talking to a
Navy recruiter a couple of years back and he told me that when Top Gun
first came out, they had more recruitees than they knew what to do
with.
As for the use of 'Semper-Fi' and 'Hoorah,' we use them all the time. I
have been amazed at the amount of realism that has been put into SAAB.
I was watching tonight's episode: 'Chiggie Von Richtoffen' and above
the bar in the lounge there is a neon sign with a bulldog's head that
says: 'Tun Tavern.' The Marine Corps was founded in Philly, PA,
November 10th, 1775 in a bar called Tun Tavern.
The details in the show are really astounding.

My husband is a retired Marine (Gunny) and Semper Fi and Hoo-Yah (he
pronounces is Urh-raah) are part of the vocabulary, especially when
meeting and talking to other Marines.
Now when I was in the Navy, they were always saying "Its a fine Navy
Day" no matter what the weather.
