Charles Rocket
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search
Charles Rocket, born Charles Claverie (August 24, 1949 - October 7,
2005), was an American film and television actor. After working in
local TV news for a few years, he made his network debut on the popular
program Saturday Night Live.

Rocket was cast for the 1980-81 season, which followed the departure
of the remaining members of the show's popular original cast and
original executive producer Lorne Michaels. Singled out by new
executive producer Jean Doumanian as the star of her new ensemble,
Rocket was promoted as "kind of a cross between Bill Murray and Chevy
Chase." Rocket was given the coveted role of anchor for the show's
Weekend Update news parody, and was featured in many sketches.

However, the new cast (save for Joe Piscopo and later Eddie Murphy) was
not at all popular with audiences. Rocket was somewhat of a standout,
though, with a majority of his sketches and Update bits garnering large
laughs. Unfortunately, Rocket would eventually doom both his and
Doumanian's tenures on the show with one word. An episode hosted by
Dallas star Charlene Tilton featured an ongoing joke in which different
cast members would vow revenge on him for some reason, in a parody of
the famed "Who Shot J.R.?" episode of Dallas. Rocket was then shot in
the chest by a sniper in the final sketch. At the end of the show, a
wheelchair-bound Charles audibly mumbled that he'd like to know "who
the fuck did it," followed by the cast and audience reacting with shock
and embarrassed laughter. The incident seemed to encapsulate all that
was wrong with Saturday Night Live at the time, and both Rocket and
Doumanian were soon fired.

Rocket recovered from this early career setback and has since acted in
many films, including Earth Girls are Easy, Dances with Wolves, and
Dumb and Dumber, and as a recurring guest star on episodic TV. Rocket
was particularly excellent as rival network president Ned Grossberg on
the brilliant 1980s cyberpunk series Max Headroom.

Rocket's body was discovered in a field near his home in Canterbury,
Connecticut, on October 7, 2005; his throat had been cut. The
Connecticut state medical examiner later ruled that he had committed
suicide.

Good one, funnyboy. Fished in! I definitely fell for that one. I
like the subtle touch of having it air during a sweeps month, too.

The only SNL cast members whom I could see getting a best-of devoted to
them based on a single full season on the show would be Chevy Chase,
Billy Crystal and Martin Short, and even there you'd surely see plenty
of clips from the times they hosted or made other special appearances.

Hell, if Charle Rocket gets one, even post-humously, then I'd want to
see a "Best Of Jim Belushi" on the air before the end of the season
too.

I agree, I have heard of suicides cutting their wrists, but never cutting
their throats. I hope there is a thorough investigation, if that's how it
happened.

Ever see the alternate ending to "Fatal Attraction" where Glenn Close
off's herself by slitting her own throat? Not that a fictional movie
scene stands as proof that it could actually happen, but realistically,
if you're strung out on drugs out of your mind, or just so mentally off
that you can "overcome" the natural tendency to stop yourself, I don't
see any reason why anyone couldn't do it to themselves. Hell, people
have stabbed themselves in the heart, so why couldn't you slit your own
throat?

Kids - don't try this at home.

That would be on there for sure, as well as his "White Guy Rap" with
Alex Karras, and the filmed bit he did where he stuffed his pants with
paper towels to look more "presentable" to the ladies in the bar.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if they did a "SNL Remembers Charles
Rocket" special at some point. There was a lot of funny stuff that they
could use, especially considering that he was only on for twelve shows.

-Rockefeller kicks poor people out of America (a cold opening)
-A Weekend Update montage
-Phil Lively (probably the first one, it was a lot funnier)
-The Accordion Killer
-Singing Billy-Grams
-A Rocket Report or two (I choose the Charlene Tilton one, and the Central
Park one)
-Saturday Night Live Action Dolls
-Mona Lisa (this was one of the best sketches that season, IMHO)
-Who Shot C.R. (interspersed throughout the show, and ending with the
infamous cuss)
-Stop A Nut
-ReaganCo. Household Products
-Serf City (well, my buddy liked it at least :-)

I agree -- with one caveat. If he was out in a field that had razor
wire on the tops of the fences, all he'd have to do is get in the right
spot and fall forward. Slitto!
