If anything, it was the other way around. A lot of people on SNL were
originally from SCTV and I am pretty sure they were the first to have
a musical act in the show.

as SCTV, and I think Martin Short was the only member of SCTV who
jumped to SNL. When John Belushi left SNL after the 1978-79 season,
SNL tried in vain to get John Candy to replace Belushi. SNL had
musical acts, but SCTV incorporated the musical acts into the skits,
and often made the musicians act in the skits or play themselves.

FWIW, SCTV came a year after SNL. I was young, but with both shows
since the beginning.

They are hardly the first sketch troupe to get the idea to go into

1976-77 in Canada (and somebody will correct me if I am wrong) but it
was the following season 1977-78 that it was syndicated to US
television stations.

bands are on tour, making rehearsal hard unless they can get in before
Thursday night.
