Jerry Todd hosted a show that pre-dated MTV by several years, including
the playing of music vids.

I cannot think of a TV critic on SCTV, save for maybe Bill Needle.

I had to check, yes you're right. I wonder why I remember the name but
don't remember the role.

Maybe, since I was wrong about Todd, I have no idea now.

But I can picture someone on SCTV (I think) playing a critic, sending up
the real critics.

The character pre-dated MTV VJs by several years?

I remembered, but then forgot after I hit 'reply'. Dooh!

I think they spoofed Sisco and Edbert's show once with the one guy fending off
attacks from the rat-dog that was on the original show.

Damn, now I'm going to be pondering this all day!

"Bill Needle" portrayed by Dave Thomas.

Bill Needle (Dave Thomas) was an angry right-wing commentator along the
lines of Joe Pyne. Needle wasn't a TV critic per se.

I recall an SCTV segment in which a number of TV critics got together
and made a truly terrible special. It was hosted by Gene Shalit
(Eugene Levy), and Rona Barrett (Catherine O'Hara) sang a duet with
him.

Maybe that's what I remember. He could have been critizing some movie
from a political standpoint.

I remember the "Gene Shalit".

I seem to remember an SCTV where Siskel and Ebert were singing Jeepers
Creepers with Gene Shalit. That might be the special mentioned above. In the
same segment Moranis did a bit as the comic strip character Henry.
