(MassLive.com) - The series has been available in fine quality on VHS
and DVD in the past, but the new transfer to high definition Blu-ray
is most impressive (Amazon.com: http://xrl.us/PrisonerBluray ). There
is newly remixed 5.1 surround sound for all 17 episodes, in addition
to the original mono tracks.

The five-disc box set has a wealth of bonus material, including early
edits of the first two episodes, Arrival and The Chimes of Big
Ben. Both include scenes not found in the aired versions and a
different musical score. Scripts, call sheets and some 1,200
production stills can also be accessed on a computer from the fifth
disc.

Perhaps the greatest thrill for fans will be a warts-and-all 94-minute
documentary, Dont Knock Yourself Out, that recounts the filming of
the series..

Fleshed out with amateur film footage shot on the set, the documentary
boasts candid discussions of the making of the series from script
writers, actors, producers, editors, cameramen and directors.

Filmed before McGoohans death earlier this year, Dont Knock Yourself
Out often paints an unflattering portrait of the series' star as
brilliant but brutal. McGoohans view is noticeably absent from the
documentary, as its producers cite his reclusive nature.

While McGoohan did indeed shy away from analyzing his work, it is a
shame that for legal or financial reasons A& E Home Video failed to
include a highly informative 35-minute televised interview McGoohan
granted to Toronto TV host Warner Troyer in 1977. McGoohan analyzed the
shows appeal and the meaning of many of its symbols.

Not coincidentally, the Blu-ray box set arrives in stores before the
airing of the AMC remake of The Prisoner with James Caviezel in the
lead role. A trailer for the cable TV remake, which airs on Nov. 15, is
included among the extras.

"When “The Prisoner” first aired in the United States 1968, one
episode was banned by CBS reportedly because it showed hallucinogenic
drug use and its central character refused to be drafted to fight"

It wasn't banned, it was no more hallucinatory than any other and he
took up a gun and shot the kid dead by the end.............

Knock yourself out with a good story... :-))))))

The 1990 "Video Companion" feature explicitly states that "Living in
Harmony" was banned by CBS in the initial run. Why would they lie?

Because no one remembers what they did in 1968 and someone thought the
banning yarn would make a good story.

Far more people got shot dead in "Gunsmoke" during the same era and no
one blinked.

Maybe somebody told it to them.... and they assumed the other person
hadn't made the whole thing up. I think if you read the book it says
it was banned for unacceptable drug use, then goes on to say *that*
couldn't be true because of - blah blah -,so it must have been
something to do with Vietnam....... 8-o

This is what I would call a double-fluff......... :-))))

I believe it was the exact opposite that got this episode dropped.

Erm, perhaps because they were a) clueless and b) more concerned in
knocking a cheap documentary together to sell a VHS tape than they
were in performing detailed research.

The video was largely based on the White/Ali book and perhaps part of
the same project. So the research had been done....... cue the LOL's

OK, so far we have Living in Harmony was dropped because a) There were
drugs given to the subject; b) There was shooting of people (not to
mention hanging); c) There was resistance to shooting of people (and to
the hanging); d) The drugged subject overcame the force of the drugs.

What a nutty muddle! Can you pick the reason Harmony was allegedly
banned in the US?

I don't remember if I saw Harmony during the Prisoner's initial US run.
It was summertime and there were summer trips when I surely missed an
episode or two the first time around.

Perhaps that's what happened to the person who first floated this
allegation: he went on holiday. We had no VCR or DVR in those days.

The answer is simple... but complicated. On the east coast Bobby
Kennedy's funeral was shown instead of Chimes of Big Ben (Episode 2).
As a consequence the 17 weeks season was short one week and towards
the end they dropped A.N.other episode to make it fit in. The first
signs of the coming confusion is demonstrated here, in a TV Listing
from an American 'paper at the time.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dbfL5ekPDio/Sid25iUGTaI/AAAAAAAAADY/UOYrra5zFlI/s400/P1040720.JPG

I haven't*actually* researched it but it seems reasonable to assume
that whilst the East Coast was 'live' at Arlington, the west coast
filled the rest of that evening with discussion shows about the
sadness of the day's events.

I have seen Living in Harmony listed as being shown in some areas in
the 1969 first-repeat runs.
