have to futz around loading the post to find out if you meant this, the
Star Trek original series, the original Battlestar Galactica, or what.

Or, you could have read the headers more closely, the "newsgroups" one
in particular.

No. The list of posts displayed in mine, and I think all, newsreaders shows
the From: and Subject: but not the other newsgroups a post was posted to.
So viewing that means clicking on the post, same as reading it does.
The whole point is that the Subject line is supposed to actually tell
people what the post is about so, especially in a group with as much
traffic as this one, they can tell whether to bother clicking on it or not
and can skip many of them.

How did you know before opening the post?
I figured it out after opening by seeing "alt.tv.prisoner" in the
Newsgroups header and "the-prisoner" in the link. But my newsreader
doesn't display either of these things in its message list.

It's common courtesy (not to mention smart, if you want people
who are interested in the show to spot it) to include the program
name when the message is being cross-posted from a show-specific
group to rec.arts.tv.
