of the Subgenious. What is surprising is that, with all the concern about
any tobacco usage, a sympathetic character in a show geared towards kids
would have a pipe. Was that ever a problem, either with CN USA or in
overseas markets?

Pipes have never been a problem in cartoons, because kids don't go out and
buy a pipe and tobacco to smoke.
CIGARETTES are what the Overbearing Moral Enforcement Brigades complain
about, because it's far easier to imitate cigarette smoking inappropriately.

My wife tells me that movies with cigarette smoking in them are to be
rated R in the upcoming months. I wonder if Powerpuff Girls will get a
higher rating at that time?

The new rating system is not retroactive, so "The Powerpuff Girls Movie" is
safe. I would also not expect them to change the ratings of the existing TV
episodes. What this new ratings system *might* affect, however, is cartoons
done in the future. I suspect that Professor Utonium will be the last major
cartoon character that has a pipe. If CN produces anything new with the
Powerpuffs, the ratings system will cause the pipe to be quickly and quietly
ditched.
The tougher issue will be imported cartoons. The Asian countries are more
tolerant of tobacco than the United States. When an Anime series is adopted
for American television, will cigars, cigarettes and pipes be digitally
replaced with lollypops? Another approach will, of course, be required once
the ratings system gives an R rating to depictions of fattening foods!

Hah! That was my first reaction as well - overeating, alchol
consumption, too much television watching, too much video games, etc.
all should, by this theory, be rated R.
Maybe it would be best just to rate anything on video as R and save
money...

Pipe smoking has very little to do with cigarette smoking. Pipe smokers do
not inhale the smoke deeply into the lungs for a maximum nicotine rush.
They enjoy the aroma of the tobacco which usually smells nice instead of
stinking like American cigarettes. The life expectancy of pipe smokers is
the same, if not higher, than for non-smokers. The addiction of cigarettes
is proven by cigarettes having replaced both cigars and pipes as the choice
of tobacco users.
Much behavior shown in movies is risk prone. Fighting, shooting people with
firearms, sky diving, riding motor bikes (FCLC), drinking alcoholic drinks,
unsafe sexual behavior, reckless motor vehicle driving, so forth. Some of
this behavior is probably more dangerous than an occasional bowl of pipe
tobacco.

While all of these form of tobacco use have health risks, cigarettes are far
more dangerous than cigars, pipes and snuff. It is unfortunate that the
fanatical wing of the anti-tobacco movement have this party line about all
forms of tobacco are equally dangerous. Cigarette smokers who have
difficulty quitting nicotine could cut their risks by switching to pipes,
but few public leaders are willing to say so.
