When Amelia first showed up on Dorian's doorstep, Dorian seemed to
mistake her for someone named "Mel"...even implying that this was a
figment of her imagination or something. Who is this "Mel"? Is she
played by the same actress?

Mel was Dorian's husband from about ten years ago. He was a great
character, a smart investigative reporter who was smitten with Dorian at
their first meeting (and she with him). The actor was incredible--very
realistic and charismatic. He was really a joy to watch. But one day he
got on a plane, and Viki was on the same plane with him, and for some reason
they switched seats (one of them wanted the window or something). Dorian
was planning a sexy surprise for him, so she sent someone to go to his seat
and tell him that there was an emergency at home, and he should return
immediately. But the messenger gave the message to Viki instead (who was in
Mel's original seat), and she rushed off the plane. The plane crashed, and
of course Dorian blamed Viki for Mel being on the plane instead of her.

Mel's body was never found, and some of us have always hoped that he would
eventually be back; he was such a wonderful character.

Anyway, occasionally when Dorian was about to do something really awful,
she'd see a sort of ghost Mel arrive to yell at her for what she was about
to do. He was sort of like her conscience. At some point they started to
have Dorian bump into this female character named Mel, who would show up
just as her husband had, in times when Dorian was about to do something bad.
The female Mel is many different characters--she may show up as a newspaper
stand owner, or a maid, or whatever is most appropriate at the time. It was
never made entirely clear whether "Mel" was a real person with lots of
different jobs, or someone that Dorian envisioned, or perhaps a series of
different people who she always saw as the female Mel.

I think it's Mel watching over her from heaven and
appearing as whatever he wants, like the way God
did on that show with Amber Tamblyn. They only
use the same actor or actress for periods of time
so we will know who it is.

Thanks for the info!

Sooo, Dorian's husband likes to pretend to be a black woman? This is
an interersting version of Heaven, all right! ^_^

So, Mel was played by Amelia's actress?

Yeah, that was totally Mel's sense of humor.

To give a little more detail. Dorian had her first vision of her
husband when the show did a two-part special 40th anniversary episode
last year. Dorian and Viki were in a car accident (Viki took Natalie's
car which Tess had sabotaged) and Viki was near death (including another
close-to-death visit to Heaven in homage to the 1987 story) Dorian
hallucinated seeing Mel. When he was alive, he was the main one out of
all Dorian's former loves who was able to call her out of her faults and
ploys. Mel implored Dorian to save Viki and not let her die - and also
gave her hell for her recent actions of pouring alchohol down an
unconscious Charlie's throat to get him out of the way (Mel was an
alchoholic and Dorian guiltily prayed to him for forgiveness before
doing so).

Dorian did finally revive Viki (a combination of both Mel and David
having got through to her) - soon after she was praying to Mel again in
the hospital's chapel where she encountered female Mel for the first
time. Mel said all the right things to lead Dorian to believe this was
a guardian angel sent by her Mel (and noted how this would so be within
his type of humor). After that she would pop up anytime Dorian needed a
humbling or an ethics check when carrying out a scheme. AMELia is the
first time Dorian's seen someone look like Guardian Angel Mel who was an
"actual person".

Actually it was not a crash, it was a bomb that blew up the plane on
the tarmac. Mel was the apparent target due to some of the
investigative reporting he was doing.

I could have sworn that the plane crashed in the ocean, because I remember
thinking that we may eventually see Mel stranded on a tropical island or
something.
