Hey Gang,

I finally had the chance to watch "Marine Life" uninterrupted last
night (Thursday) and wanted to post my thoughts on it.

I think the episode could be called a transitional episode into the
story arc in the final 4 and the subtitle would be "The Calm Before
the Storm" -- a detente between John & Rita, John I gets a nice
scene, A & C aren't worrying about detergent -- even little Theo is
happy! It actually reminded me a little of the episode "The Irvin
Files" from the 7th season -- that one also had a man whose wife was
missing under suspicious circumstances.

Roy Pardee -- so concerned about not marrying a mail-order bride that
is too Americanized. Hmmm... I'd almost feel sorry for the schlub
except that he's obviously too stoopid to realize that a mail-order-
flipping-bride from out of the US is most likely trying to get to the
US to become Americanized! I do feel bad for his brother -- talk
about a PSA to not use drugs! And almost-choked-to-death-Natalia --
she worked at... uh "Moose McFriday's"?! Obviously a place for cheap
drinks and fried mozzarella sticks and wait staff with lots of
flair, 'kay? I thought for sure she'd work at a place with a Russian
name. BTW, I've had to deal with the INS so many times this past
month so I'm calling the mention of them as a shout-out to me! ;)
Heh...just kidding, FedGuys, right? Heh. :o

The Other Case--
Justin Tangiers -- wtf kind of name is that? It sound like a faux
name from...uh, something! Like a play on "Timberlake"! I read here that the
character was like Eddie Izzard...I actually thought
mostly of Philip Seymour Hoffman. He really seemed to be channeling
P.S.H. from several of his movies, incl. "Boogie Nights"
and "Happiness" (ack, please, no.) I also saw something recently
about a NY murder involving a gay night scene & a vivacious party boy
from the 90's that this reminded me of. The music biz bits were good -
- the poster of Sid Vicious..uh, he also stabbed his gf so an
interesting connection.

Remy Blanchard -- the name seems to be from Midnight in the Garden of
Good and Evil! And John Irvin says he's "very rich" but his apartment
looks like that?! WTF? Not the furnishings but the paint on the
walls was cracked. Ho-kay.

Randall Stokes. Well, first of all, I think the last name is a shout-
out to The Stokes! :) He's supposed to be a Marine but he didn't
have the physical presence at all of being a Marine. I didn't realize
it till later but it just didn't seem to fit. Was he acting like a
civilian and that's why he didn't seem to "be" a Marine? When the two
MPs went in the cell - he didn't assume the Marine posture. I think
two years in the Marine Corps would give him more of an unconscious
Marine attitude. No wonder the was the Sgt. was on his case all the
time -- get with the program, dude!

Ironic phrasing of the day: Justin referring to using Randy as
a "peace offering" -- *ahem*

Something I'm sick of: John Irvin's "It's ok to be gay" PSA -- been
there, done that, let's move the fluck on. I guess this is still an
issue for some people but enough already! Let John I have some scenes
*NOT* involving his sexuality, for cripe's sake!

Meeting Theo's teacher -- wouldn't they have done that back in the
Fall? Um, parent-teacher conferences, anyone? I don't
like A & C but the scenes with them didn't bother me this week. I guess
the way I feel is sort of like what those who didn't like Diane &
Danny or previous pair-ups must have felt, but the brutal combination
of A & C, Val (gak) and losing Diane and the replacement of Jackie O
really strained my patience last year. I'm coming to terms with those
things and liking Jackie O much more this year had helped. Now, if
only Val would get transferred to Timbuktu, I *might* feel better
about A & C. ;)

Guten nacht & take care,
Dina :)

Oops, my bad - I thought the guy had been stabbed (he was bludgeoned)
so that's why I thought it was an interesting connection. Nevermind!

"Justin Tangier" is a play on Julian Casablancas from the Strokes. He reminded
me of PSH too, but I can see the physical (only) comparison to Eddie specially
with the slutty eyeliner.

Or like that pseudonym Clay Shaw was using in JFK (Bertrand -- wasn't Tommy Lee
Jones great in that?) Blame the art department for the cracking paint. He was
supposed to be rich.

Still being on season 8 in the UK (sound familiar?) I got a chance to watch
Marine Life thanks to the wonder of the internet. I thought I'd post my
thoughts on the season 10 episode as a viewer who is just being introduced
to the TRod and Connie characters. I hope I don't retread too much that has
already been discussed, and if I do I hope there is something new in my
perspective...

1st: Connie and Andy? Wow. Seems a little unlikely but I did like the
chemistry they showed together in this ep, starting early on with their
exchange about the John and Rita situation. The unlikeliness hit me when
they were visiting in Theo's classroom together, just looking at the pairing
if you know what I mean. But she does have a nice smile...

The final shot with Sipowicz standing in the middle of the classroom by
himself, just looking at Connie and Theo over in another part of the
classroom--he seemed to be saying 'wow I'm a lucky guy, but geez.. do I
deserve this' with his expression and body language... Part of me felt like
ok enough already, can't the man embrace what he has and be happy about it?
I think it would be great if they would let the character go there and just
smile and laugh and joke around, at least for a little while. Now would be
a great time since he's got someone as great as Connie in his life.

Next, Baldwin & Val: I wasn't into this storyline as much, I'm not such a
big fan of these two actors' work on the show. I also had major deja vu
with Val coming in to the precinct and kind of half-heartedly telling
Baldwin that she was worried about this guy (the ex-convict now released who
was playing mind games with her). Then Baldwin finds the guy and threatens
him sufficiently. Major flashback to season 1, with Laurie (Sherry
Stringfield) telling Kelly that she thought she was being followed but it
was probably nothing, Kelly taking action, visiting the two cons running
things from prison. This whole storyline felt unoriginal because we've seen
it before, maybe it's a just device to further the Val & Baldwin
relationship? I didn't find anything new in the way the actors presented it
either. Baldwin in particular seems to always be forcing his voice out of
his gut and glaring too much. It would be nice to see some more relaxed
behavior from him.

PAA John: I agree that too much is made of the fact that the guy is gay.
He's a guy like anyone else, personally I don't find the character that
fascinating. If he were to find a life partner that would spice things up I
think. So long as they focused on the story between two people and not so
much on the fact that it was a gay relationship. Of course maybe they've
tried this already, I don't know since this is the only episode I've seen
beyond season 8.

John Clark: I was very impressed with MPG's work. He seems very much in
tune with his character. I look forward to seeing more of him and Sipowicz
together. Not too much of him in this episode, I want more!

Rita: Wow, those huge eyes, what a knockout! Excellent work as well. I
especially liked the scene where John says 'let's at least be friends' and
she kind of takes him down a notch. That worked really well and turned me
on too! It's the eyes. (The nicely-fitting outfit helped also.)

TRod: Nothing unexpected, solid work. Look forward to seeing more of him.

So it looks like there's still alot to look forward to after 8 years of the
same TV show...that's all for now.

I "saw" the pairing more in that sirtuation--I don't know if it was
because of the situation, or, I swear, they have uglied her up. Not
"ugly", but plain--little make up, hair kinda messy. It's like they
want her to LOOK more like she fits with Andy.

Not to mention some more butt....

The Conflicted Search is everything in drama--once the partner is
found, the story is over. Andy/Connie can NOT stay "happily ever
after", where is the drama in that?
Ditto PA John--his pining for a relationship is the drama. (OT--I'm
wondering if the show Ed will return to NBC next year, now that Ed
"picked his woman")

I dont like her acting, and guess what? It's the eyes :) I think
she over-uses that wide-eyed little-girl look.

I meant that I especially noticed the unlikeliness of such a young beautiful
woman choosing to be with an older, not-so-beautiful-on-the-outside man in
that scene. Maybe because it was a more social-type scene than usual. But
Connie looked fine to me, she looked pretty good actually. I can't compare
to other season 10 episodes re: the uglying, but I didn't notice a major
difference (I have watched her in a couple episodes now from season 8).
Whatever her hair/makeup, she is a good-looking woman.

I don't necessarily agree, I think that if Andy/Connie settled down happily
maybe the show could improve by focusing more on the policework OR it would
give each character a new dimension to be explored outside of the office. I
don't think that once 'the partner' is found there is no longer any conflict
or problems. Now that I think of it I'm not that interested in seeing Gay
John in a relationship or in anything actually, I just don't find the
character interesting. I think he is a little out of place on the show,
despite all the babysitting. I would like to see Andy happy though--see how
he deals with his wife and kid after a day of having to rough-up a perp to
get a confession. He might also be less ready to take risks.

I don't think it's something she's conscious of, you don't really control
the size of your eyes. I like her acting style, I find it very direct and
persuasive.. from this one episode that I've seen her in at least.
